Phi Kappa Psi is a national fraternity with over 95 Chapters. Stretching across the nation, Phi Kappa Psi brothers share the largest endowment fund of any fraternity, with over $40,000 of scholarships given out during the spring of 2007. Over 100 members of Phi Kappa Psi have served in the U.S. Congress, and members have also served as the President of the United States, Attorney-General, Secretary of Treasury, Secretary of Commerce, Secretary of the Interior, Secretary of the Army, Postmaster General, Director of the Peace Corps, and U.S. Ambassador. More than 104,000 members have been initiated into Phi Kappa Psi since 1852. The Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity was founded on February 19, 1852 at Jefferson College in Pennsylvania by William H. Letterman and Charles P. T. Moore. Phi Psi's founding was quite unique. During an epidemic of influenza, the founders spent many nights caring for ill friends. This led to a great appreciation of "the great joy of serving others". Letterman and Moore then called on others to join them in starting an association to promote service, scholarship, and leadership at the university.
