Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How is a Service Sorority different than other sororities?
A: A Service Sorority is an organization whose members are dedicated to doing community service. Of course, service is not all that Omega Phi Alpha is about; it's also about making new friends, learning leadership skills and forming sisterhood bonds. We have many social events and also participate in Greek Week every spring with the other sororities and fraternities on campus.

Q: What are the benefits of joining Omega Phi Alpha?
A: O Phi A helps young women build leadership skills, learn time management skills, meet new people, build self-confidence, serve the community and university, and have lots of fun! Alpha chapter has a close-knit sisterhood, so you'll always have someone there for you!

Q: Do I need to go through Panhellenic Rush to join OPA?
A: If you are wanting to join O Phi A, you do not need to go through Panhellenic Rush. Since Omega Phi Alpha is a member of the GIB (Greek Independent Board), O Phi A members will not be at Pan Hellenic Rush. We hold our own Rush events in the fall and spring. Rush is FREE and lots of fun! It's a really casual atmosphere where you can just be yourself and not worry about being "picked".

Q: How much does it cost to be a member of OPA?
A: Dues for active members are $80/semester and for pledges it is $100 for the pledge semester. But don't let the cost keep you from joining! We can work with you and your budget, allowing you to make payments over time. There are also optional costs throughout the year, such as t-shirts and our spring formal. Dues cover the service projects, some sisterhood activities, Rush, and Homecoming activities.

Q: Do I have to come to Rush every night?
A: You are not required to attend Rush every night, but you are greatly encouraged. It's a great time to get to know the sisters and to ask questions and find out more about OPA. Since different activities are planned for each night, you're bound to find out something new. Plus, it's free and there will be refreshments so there's no reason to be shy! If you have class or work and are not able to be at Rush every night, let a sister know. The final night of Rush is reserved for potential new members to pick their Bigs, so make sure you come the last night, or talk the membership director ahead of time.

Q: What should I wear to OPA Rush?
A: You can wear whatever you'd like! OPA members don't judge people on what they wear. We want you to be comfortable being yourself, so you can wear pajamas if you'd like!

Q: Can I be in other organizations and still be in OPA?
A: Yes! Many of our members are involved in other campus activities, such as the Undergraduate Student Government (USG), Hall Council, and more. Being involved in campus activities is a lesson in time-management, so there may conflicts from time to time, but knowing your priorities will help you through these conflicts. Members of social sororities are welcome to join OPA, but the conflicts will be numerous, since we do many of the same things as social sororities, but also a lot of different activities (such as service projects).
