Bowling Green State University
Sept. 5:

What does it all mean? How can I get involved?
Over the last eight days, this email correspondence has provided information on a variety of topics from the emergence of the University System of Ohio to the role of technology in learning. Together, the “nine days of data” were intended to provide important context on the present and future state of higher education in Ohio and the nation.

And, while the information may be useful in and of itself, the real power of the data comes from using it to make intentional decisions about our future. Already, individuals have posted additional thoughts on the strategic planning blog, proving that new and important perspective comes once you have a starting point for dialogue.

The response to the nine days of data and to the invitation to Charting Our Future week has been as diverse as the topics covered. Via email, on the blog and across campus individuals have shared that they feel…

This isn’t for me…aren’t there people better able to answer these questions? This is for me? Wow, no one has ever asked me to provide my opinion before.
I’m nervous…I don’t feel my opinions can be safely voiced in an open forum. I’m excited… interacting with people from different areas of campus is a new opportunity.
My view isn’t shared…it’s not popular and no one wants to hear it. Many of our views were shared… it’s surprising how much we have in common.
I just don’t have the time…my schedule is full and I have important work to do. I’m planning on coming…I’ll make the time because I’m curious and I’m interested in participating.

Which reaction is right? All of them are. This process has been new for the campus, from the individuals putting it together to each and every person receiving these emails. What can be said is that everything that can be done is being done to provide an engaging collaborative experience for us–all of us–to talk about what is important for BGSU.

The Charting Our Future sessions that will be held between September 8 and 12 provide a starting point for the discussions about big ideas that shape BGSU’s future. What should our vision be? What is our mission? What core values are important to guide our actions? What overarching goals will direct our efforts? Each session will contribute key ideas to these questions and the campus will have visibility to those results through the strategic planning blog.

Many have asked what happens after Charting Our Future week. Once all sessions are completed, the Cabinet will look carefully at your input, consult with appropriate groups and, shortly after the conclusion of all of the discussions, they will issue a statement about the results.

Many of you may have seen the video highlighting key elements of the collaborative dialogue process. During that meeting, one participant commented that everyone has a voice, but we don’t always have a forum in which to be heard. Great effort has been made to create an experience where everyone’s voice is welcome and valued–please come and join the dialogue.

"They [the strategic planning group] have served as a group of committed colleagues to get the rest of us ready to plan effectively. They have completed important background work and built a platform for all of us to use as we create the new plan. And, when I say “we”, I mean all of you and everyone else in the BGSU community."
–Dr. Carol A. Cartwright
Interim President
