SPRING 2008
From the beginning the Strategic Planning Team recognized that its work was to build a starting point for further discussion across the University. Efforts focused on creating
a framework, or template, to document the key aspects of the BGSU strategy. Then, the team used existing documents to fill
in the template. Team members compared documents, indentified commonalities and developed a structure. Through team dialogue,
changes were recommended, new ideas were identified and an umbrella was created to bring forward to the campus.
The documents below provided the basis for the team’s starting point:
SUMMER 2008
At the Cabinet Strategic Planning Retreat in June, Mel Hudson-Nowak and Bill Mathis, strategic planning team co-directors,
presented information on the team’s journey and process that were used to develop a University engagement roadmap and draft
strategic plan. Each vice president shared narratives pertaining to perspective and expertise for increased awareness about
what University-wide efforts are underway and why those efforts are important.
The cabinet then responded to a force field diagram that showed the strategic planning team’s analysis indicating what would
be drivers (those things that encourage or promote moving into the future) and resistors (those things that block or hinder)
to creating an ideal BGSU.
The proposed strategic planning template, including preliminary content created by the team, was then presented. Vision, mission,
core values, learning outcomes and goals were discussed. Cabinet members worked to enhance the proposed roadmap in preparation
for collaborative dialogues with the campus in the fall.
