Strategic Goals and Accomplishments 2011-12
GOAL 1: Facilitate life-long learning, critical thinking & personal growth.
Strategy: Create distinctive coherent undergraduate learning experiences that integrate curricular and co-curricular programs.
Accomplished to date:
- Implemented elements of CUE.
- Reviewed all general education courses. Prioritized changes to the general education curriculum. Provided faculty grants to support innovative pedagogy in the general education program.
- Implemented the Learning Commons.
- Created the accelerated bachelor's/master's program and first program is in Economics.
- Created a strategic plan for graduate programs which includes targeted fee-paying master's professional degrees.
- Increase in number of online student credit hours and courses offered.
- Began preparing for HLC visit.
- Supported Student Affairs Leadership programming.
Strategy: Expand the student populations for BGSU enrollment and implement programs to recruit them and retain them to successful program completion.
Accomplished to date:
- Increased quality of freshman class from 21.9 (2010) average ACT to 22.0 (2011) and from 3.20 (2010) GPA to 3.25 (2011).
- Continued to reduce tuition discounting.
- Enrolled 3rd largest freshman class.
- Enrolled largest ethnically diverse class (22%) including all-time high enrollment of Asian & African-American freshmen.
- Enrolled largest number of out of state freshmen students (600).
- Increased the use of technology to enhance greater efficiency in the recruitment process.
- Implemented block scheduling for Fall 2012.
- Revised program for opening weekend.
- Ranked 24th in country by in supporting Veterans.
- Created a comprehensive Strategic Plan for retention.
- Began planning for greater international student presence.
- Developed plan to grow enrollment to 25,000-student headcount by 2018.
- Implemented Falcon SOAR program
- Established career accelerator program.
GOAL 2: Produce high quality scholarships & creative achievements throughout the university.
Strategy: Enhance institutional capabilities for research and creative achievements.
Accomplished to date:
- Opened the Wolfe Center for the Arts with sell out audiences for Chicago & The Arabian Nights.
- Hired new Dean of Business Administration and new Chair for Computer Science.
- Improved quality of technology transfer with Rocket Ventures partnership.
- Received two Fulbright Fellowships.
- Redeveloped Strategic Plan for Graduate Education.
- Improved internal process for technology transfer.
- Focused and trained Patent Committee on commercialization potential.
- Conducted review of University Patent portfolio and selected new patent counsel.
- Used existing faculty resources (re-allocation) to create cluster hires primarily in the sciences.
Not Accomplished:
- Increase in number of students who study abroad.
GOAL 3: Build a diverse community & culture of inclusion
Strategy: Adapt institutional processes and resources for attracting new faculty and staff and for promoting the development of their talent and contributions.
Accomplished to date:
- Passed Gender Identity & Gender Expression as part of the BGSU & anti-harassment policies.
- Restructured the Office of Equity & Diversity as direct report to the President.
- Ensured collaboration in establishing up-to-date hiring policies.
Strategy: Increase institutional diversity and inclusion through communication of benefits.
Accomplished to date:
- Continued to support the work of the Inclusion Network.
- Worked to increase the diversity of the students, faculty and staff.
- Supported the work of the Office of Multicultural Affairs.
GOAL 4: Develop mutually beneficial relationships between all stakeholders
Accomplished to date:
- Bargained in good faith for the first faculty contract.
- Hosted the first round of the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament.
- Hosted 26 "Meet and Greet" the new President events in cities across the country.
- Continued to participate in the IUC shared services projects.
- Reformulated Advocates/Advisory Boards.
- Increased the collaboration of the Arts programs.
- Discussed the hotel feasibility study and incubator study and their next steps.
- Began preparing for upcoming Comprehensive Campaign.
- Enhanced our web presence and use of social media.
- Issued an RFP for the Student Health Center.
- Developed a Marketing & Communication Plan.
GOAL 5: Support faculty & staff performance & development
Accomplished to date:
- Completed a successful BGSU Leadership Institute.
- Provided professional development funding to faculty and staff.
- Completed an Administrative Staff study and began program work on a study of Classified Staff structure.
Not Accomplished:
- Review recognition programs for faculty and staff.
- Develop faculty leadership program.
GOAL 6: Create an optimal fiscal and physical plant infrastructure
Strategy: Realign individual & institutional incentives & resources to support institutional priorities
Accomplished to date:
- Established the NSCIP data to benchmark faculty-staffing levels by department.
- Incorporated a common scorecard into unit level strategic plans.
- Began programming the renovation of the Traditions buildings & the implementation of the academic portion of the Master Plan.
- Created an Efficiency Task Force with report due by Fall 2012.
- Created a plan for new Greek housing and renovated Recreational Center.
- Enhanced the use of technology to increase greater efficiencies (Canvas, Starfish, etc.)
