Strategic Goals and Accomplishments 2011-12

GOAL 1: Facilitate life-long learning, critical thinking & personal growth.

Strategy: Create distinctive coherent undergraduate learning experiences that integrate curricular and co-curricular programs.

 Accomplished to date:

  1. Implemented elements of CUE.
  2. Reviewed all general education courses. Prioritized changes to the general education curriculum. Provided faculty grants to support innovative pedagogy in the general education program.
  3. Implemented the Learning Commons.
  4. Created the accelerated bachelor's/master's program and first program is in Economics.
  5. Created a strategic plan for graduate programs which includes targeted fee-paying master's professional degrees.
  6. Increase in number of online student credit hours and courses offered.
  7. Began preparing for HLC visit.
  8. Supported Student Affairs Leadership programming.
Strategy: Expand the student populations for BGSU enrollment and implement programs to recruit them and retain them to successful program completion. 

Accomplished to date:

  1. Increased quality of freshman class from 21.9 (2010) average ACT to 22.0 (2011) and from 3.20 (2010) GPA to 3.25 (2011).
  2. Continued to reduce tuition discounting.
  3. Enrolled 3rd largest freshman class.
  4. Enrolled largest ethnically diverse class (22%) including all-time high enrollment of Asian & African-American freshmen.
  5. Enrolled largest number of out of state freshmen students (600).
  6. Increased the use of technology to enhance greater efficiency in the recruitment process.
  7. Implemented block scheduling for Fall 2012.
  8. Revised program for opening weekend.
  9. Ranked 24th in country by in supporting Veterans.
  10. Created a comprehensive Strategic Plan for retention.
  11. Began planning for greater international student presence.
  12. Developed plan to grow enrollment to 25,000-student headcount by 2018.
  13. Implemented Falcon SOAR program
  14. Established career accelerator program.

GOAL 2: Produce high quality scholarships & creative achievements throughout the university.

Strategy: Enhance institutional capabilities for research and creative achievements.

Accomplished to date:

  1. Opened the Wolfe Center for the Arts with sell out audiences for Chicago & The Arabian Nights.
  2. Hired new Dean of Business Administration and new Chair for Computer Science.
  3. Improved quality of technology transfer with Rocket Ventures partnership.
  4. Received two Fulbright Fellowships.
  5. Redeveloped Strategic Plan for Graduate Education.
  6. Improved internal process for technology transfer.
  7. Focused and trained Patent Committee on commercialization potential.
  8. Conducted review of University Patent portfolio and selected new patent counsel.
  9. Used existing faculty resources (re-allocation) to create cluster hires primarily in the sciences.

Not Accomplished:

  1. Increase in number of students who study abroad.

GOAL 3: Build a diverse community & culture of inclusion

Strategy: Adapt institutional processes and resources for attracting new faculty and staff and for promoting the development of their talent and contributions. 

Accomplished to date:

  1. Passed Gender Identity & Gender Expression as part of the BGSU & anti-harassment policies.
  2. Restructured the Office of Equity & Diversity as direct report to the President.
  3. Ensured collaboration in establishing up-to-date hiring policies.
Strategy: Increase institutional diversity and inclusion through communication of benefits. 

Accomplished to date:

  1. Continued to support the work of the Inclusion Network.
  2. Worked to increase the diversity of the students, faculty and staff.
  3. Supported the work of the Office of Multicultural Affairs.

GOAL 4: Develop mutually beneficial relationships between all stakeholders

Accomplished to date:

  1. Bargained in good faith for the first faculty contract.
  2. Hosted the first round of the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament.
  3. Hosted 26 "Meet and Greet" the new President events in cities across the country.
  4. Continued to participate in the IUC shared services projects.
  5. Reformulated Advocates/Advisory Boards.
  6. Increased the collaboration of the Arts programs.
  7. Discussed the hotel feasibility study and incubator study and their next steps.
  8. Began preparing for upcoming Comprehensive Campaign.
  9. Enhanced our web presence and use of social media.
  10. Issued an RFP for the Student Health Center.
  11. Developed a Marketing & Communication Plan.

GOAL 5: Support faculty & staff performance & development

Accomplished to date:

  1. Completed a successful BGSU Leadership Institute.
  2. Provided professional development funding to faculty and staff.
  3. Completed an Administrative Staff study and began program work on a study of Classified Staff structure.

Not Accomplished:

  1. Review recognition programs for faculty and staff.
  2. Develop faculty leadership program.

GOAL 6: Create an optimal fiscal and physical plant infrastructure

Strategy: Realign individual & institutional incentives & resources to support institutional priorities

Accomplished to date:

  1. Established the NSCIP data to benchmark faculty-staffing levels by department.
  2. Incorporated a common scorecard into unit level strategic plans.
  3. Began programming the renovation of the Traditions buildings & the implementation of the academic portion of the Master Plan.
  4. Created an Efficiency Task Force with report due by Fall 2012.
  5. Created a plan for new Greek housing and renovated Recreational Center.
  6. Enhanced the use of technology to increase greater efficiencies (Canvas, Starfish, etc.)
