Students in my lab will have the opportunity to contribute to the manual annotation process of a newly sequenced microbe genome provided to our department by the DOE-JGI as part of the DOE JGI Undergraduate Research Program in Microbial Genome Annotation. Students will learn how to retrieve and analyze DNA and protein sequences using web-based bioinformatic tools. Principally this will involve examining alignments and conserved protein motifs that are indicative of functional proteins. It is anticipated that this exposure to real data will encourage STEM students to take advanced courses in genetics and molecular biology.
