As a SETGO Summer Researcher at BGSU you will gain hands-on research experience in a cutting edge field, a $3,500 stipend, and a competitive advantage - all while having fun! For 10 weeks during the summer, students immersed in the SSR experience work side-by-side with graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and faculty who serve as role models and mentors. They discover how modern research is done in an environment that stresses collaboration and multidisciplinary approaches to problem solving. They'll join informal weekly forums in which scientists inside and outside of academia discuss the latest advances in their own research, and making informed career choices - explore mentoring issues, career opportunities in STEM fields, pathways to graduate school, and how to balance work and family responsibilities. The summer experience is capped by a mini-symposium at which participants present a poster on their research project.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Be currently registered and in good standing at Bowling Green State University or Owens Community College
- Majoring in math, computer science, and/or natural sciences
- US citizens/permanent residents
- Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA
To Apply send:
- the completed SSR application form (click here to download or pick one up from the Program Manager, Liz Ross)
- two letters of recommendation from faculty member, research advisors or others who can attest to the student's suitability for a research experience, motivation for a research career, or classroom performance
- an official copy of your college transcript
- a short statement describing research areas of interest to you, and relevant courses you have taken in those areas. Be explicit about the research areas that interest you as we will use these to find the best match between mentors and your research interests. Students are encouraged to contact potential Faculty Mentors directly to identify common goals and interests.
The deadline for SSR applications is March 1, 2010. Selection of participants will be made as early as possible and continue until early April. SSR will run for 10 weeks from May 17,2010 until July 23, 2010.Those selected for the program will be notified by email, with information about a potential research topic and research mentor. Students are encouraged to contact Dr. Moira van Staaden, or Liz Ross (Program Manager) if in need of further information or assistance.
