Students in my lab will have the opportunity to initiate functional analysis experiments that are a logical outgrowth of genomic analyses of Phytophthora sojae, a major pathogen of soybeans, or the microbe to be sequenced by the DOE-JGI as part of the “adopt a microbe” initiative that BGSU Biological Sciences has been invited to join. These experiments will likely involve cloning and heterologous expression of proteins in Arabidopsis thaliana, or Sacharromyces cerevisae in the appropriate mutant background. Recent undergraduates in my lab have included Maria Brown who is now working for Teach for America and Franklin Warren who is now in medical school at Case Western. These students were participants in the STARS and AIMS programs respectively. Ms Brown’s honors project involved the characterization of a novel protein in the aromatic amino acid pathway of Phytophthora sojae. Franklin Warren was a coauthor in a manuscript published in Current Genetics in 2005. Currently I have three undergraduates in my lab as part of an NSF-supported undergraduate training program in genome annotation focusing on Phytophthora sojae and three other recently sequenced oomycete genomes. pmorris@bgsu.edu
