International Travel

As Bowling Green State University continues to broaden its academic study abroad experiences, faculty staff and students are traveling more frequently to locations around the world.  The university recognizes its duty in safeguarding the health & safety of faculty staff and students as they travel internationally which is why we have partnered with International SOS, the world’s leader in international healthcare, medical assistance, and security services.  ISOS works with Bowling Green State University and its student and employee health care benefits programs to provide another level of coverage for travelers in their abroad location.

The services provided by International SOS range from simple telephone advice from field experts, referrals to vetted providers, to full-scale medical and security evacuations.  The International SOS network of multilingual specialists operates 24/7/365 from three alarm centers around the world.  So, if you run out of medication in China, need to see a doctor in France, lose a passport in New Zealand or encounter a medical or security crisis anywhere in the world we strongly encourage you to take advantage of International SOS Assistance Services.
When you are traveling abroad, you should always carry the International SOS Membership Card which includes the University’s membership number and phone numbers to International SOS alarm centers worldwide.  A Membership App is also available. The Membership App delivers all the benefits of International SOS membership directly to your mobile device. The Membership App is available on Android, Blackberry and iPhone devices. For more information visit app.internationalsos.com.  After installing the App, you will need your membership number to log in. To obtain a membership card contact Risk Management or Study Abroad.

Listed below are some of the key benefits of ISOS membership provided to you by Bowling Green State University:

  • Pre-departure preparation: By logging into the international SOS website (www.internationalsos.com) you can sign-up for health and security email alerts and review valuable country-specific information.
  • While abroad: International SOS will help you locate a qualified healthcare provider, replace a prescription or simply answer a general medical or security concern.
  • In an emergency: International SOS can ensure you get immediate care whether it requires evacuating you to a center of medical excellence or closely monitoring your condition with local doctors, or evacuating in case of political unrest or disturbances abroad.

It is important to note that International SOS is not health insurance. This assistance program benefit provided by Bowling Green State University is designed to supplement and enhance your personal and supplemental health insurance with medical and security advice services.  It does not cover individual medical or evacuation expenses. Bowling Green State University therefore requires that all travelers on BGSU-sponsored programs have their own medical, evacuation and travel insurance. Any charges incurred by Bowling Green State University for International SOS services not covered by existing insurance will be passed on to the individual.

The Bowling Green State University ISOS Authorized Person is Michelle Lee-McLaughlin Ploeger.
