Campus Service Officers (CSO)

In addition to the sworn police officers, the BGSU Police Department employs a student safety service staff that provides services for the University community. Campus Service Officers (CSOs) do not have statutory arrest powers, but work to assist police with security matters.

Duties
CSOs are responsible for securing University buildings, patrolling areas of the campus not accessible by patrol cars, assisting motorists with jump starts and vehicle unlocks, monitoring parking problems, and providing walking escorts on campus. They must be aware of what is going on around them at all times. They are not to involve themselves in any type of confrontation; that is the job of the police officers. They are required to answer radio time checks along with the other working units.

Training
Newly hired CSOs are trained by police officers and existing CSOs during regular working hours. They work along side the CSOs to learn the duties of the position.

Equipment
Each CSO is issued a portable two-way radio and a set of keys when reporting to work. Radios are used to communicate with the police dispatcher and the student CSO dispatcher in case of emergencies or to answer a time check. Each CSO is issued a unit number to be used over the radio.

Safety
Safety cannot be stressed enough. CSOs are not police officers and are not expected to deal with situations for which they have not been trained or equipped to handle. If they have any doubt about something that they have seen or discovered, they should radio for a police officer.
