Associate Professor of Sociology

Ph.D., University of Wisconsin-Madison, 1992

Professor Sanchez' research addresses the gender division of labor and how struggles and negotiations over the meanings of masculinity and femininity in public arenas and private life affect U.S. families. A vein of her research covers housework, employment and leisure patterns among various populations, and whether gender inequities cause perceptions of unfairness and relationship difficulties. Currently, she and her colleagues (Steven L. Nock, PI, University of Virginia and James D. Wright, University of Central Florida) have grants from a private foundation and the National Science Foundation to study Louisiana's covenant marriage law. This quantitative and qualitative data collection effort will use a 5-year longitudinal study of newly-married couples to examine potential differences in marital quality and stability, parenting intentions and practices, and divorce processes and rates. The study is currently in the field with the second wave of the three-wave study.
