"Young Children in Immigrant Families: Still 'Divided Fates?'" Jennifer E. Glick, Arizona State University, Friday, January 30th. Union 207 11:30-12:30

Jennifer E. Glick is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Arizona State University. Her research and teaching interests are concentrated in the areas of family demography and immigration. Her research focuses on three areas of immigrant adaptation in the United States: (1) the life course transitions of immigrant and US born youth and the educational trajectories of young children in immigrant families; (2) living arrangements and intergenerational wealth-flows among immigrants in the United States; and (3) residential segregation of immigrants.

"The Policy Implications of Women's and Men's Differing Interests in
Modern Marriage." Steven L. Nock, University of Virginia,

Steven L. Nock is Professor of Sociology, Director of the Marriage Matters project, and co-founder of the Center for Children, Families, and the Law. He is the author of six books and over seventy scholarly articles. His research focuses on the causes and consequences of change in the American family. He focuses on the role of social science in public policy. He has investigated issues of privacy, ummarried fatherhood, cohabitation, commitment, divorce, and marriage. His most recent book, Marriage in Men's Lives, won the William J. Goode Book Award for the most outstanding research on the family from the American Sociological Association in 1999.

"Nonresident Father Involvement and Child Well-Being." Valarie King, Pennsylvania State University, Monday, March 22nd. BTSU 207 11:30-12:30

Valarie King is Associate Professor of Sociology, Demography, and Human Development & Family Studies at The Pennsylvania State University. She is the author of more than twenty research articles and book chapters. Her research has examined nonresident fathers, rural family dynamics, and grandparenting. Prof. King's work has been funded by the Brookdale Foundation and the MacArthur Foundation. She was recently awarded a $1.4 million grant from NICHD for a five-year study on nonresident father involvement and child well-being.

"Daily Sexual Interest, Mood, and Partner Support as Predictors of Coitus Among Adolescent Women." J. Dennis Fortenberry, MD, MS, Associate Director, Section of Adolescent Medicine, Indiana University School of Medicine, Monday, April 19th. BTSU 207 11:30-12:30

Dr. Fortenberry has received medical training in internal medicine and adolescent medicine. He received epidemiology and biostatistics training from the University of Oklahoma. A five-year collaboration with Richard Jessor at the Institute for Behavioral Sciences in Boulder allowed for extensive experience in the study of adolescent behavior. His current
research program focuses on the day-to-day phenomenology of adolescent sexual behavior, adolescent sexual dyads and the development of sexuality and sexual relationships during adolescence and young adulthood. Most of the research attempts to link adolescent sexuality and sexual behavior to
the risk of sexually transmitted infections.

Two notable scholars will present a point/counterpoint debate about the marriage promotion, marriage education, and counseling programs that are being written into federal and state welfare laws. This event is a joint collaboration between the Department of Psychology and CFDR.

Dr. Robert Emery,
University of Virginia, Director of the Center for Children, Families and the Law, and Director of Clinical Training in Psychology.
The Complex Consequences of Divorce for Children: Overview and Consideration of Implications for Divorce and Marriage Policy.
  · Dr. Emery will present his own research on how court-ordered mediation and marital therapy counseling can reduce divorce in the United States and benefit children from troubled families.

Dr. Pamela J. Smock,
University of Michigan, Associate Director, Institute for Social Research, Associate Professor of Sociology, and Senior Associate Research Scientist. "Strengthening Marriage as a Way to Combat Poverty and Improve Child Well being: What Do We Know from Social Science Research?"
  · Dr. Smock will present her evaluation of research relevant to marriage strengthening initiatives, arguing that the evidence so far provides little support for the idea that these measures will ultimately reduce poverty and benefit poor children in the U.S.
