LONGITUDINAL DATA ANALYSIS SEMINAR
A 2-Day Course on Regression Analysis for Panel Data
Instructor: Dr. Paul Allison, Department of Sociology, University of Pennsylvania
Wednesday, August 5 and Thursday, August 6, 2009 9:00 am – 4:00 pm Room 315 Bowen-Thompson Student Union
Paul Allison will present a two-day seminar on Longitudinal Data Analysis focusing on regression analysis of panel data –
the most common type of longitudinal data-consisting of measurements of predictor and response variables at two or more points
in time for many individuals.
Panel data have two major attractions: the ability to control for unobservables, and the determination of causal ordering.
However, repeated measurements typically violate assumptions of independence. This course covers four methods for dealing
with dependent observations: robust standard errors, generalized estimating equations, random effects models and fixed effects
models. Different variations of these methods are considered for quantitative outcomes, categorical outcomes, and count data
outcomes.
The course is based in part on his book, Fixed Effects Regression Methods for Longitudinal Data Using SAS, published by the SAS Institute in 2005. SAS will be used for the many empirical examples, but lecture notes using Stata
are also available to participants.
Space is limited. Pre-registration is required.
