FEATURED WORKOUT

Developing a personal exercise routine is very difficult.  It is important to integrate a variety of exercises that work different areas of the body.  The featured workouts contained on these pages are a few of the BGSU Personal Trainers'  favorite maneuvers.

Physical activity, by its very nature, carries with it certain inherent risks that cannot be eliminated regardless of the care taken to avoid injuries.  The Department of Recreational Sports, through its Student Recreation Center, provides for activities such as weight lifting, running, aerobic activities, classes, and other sporting activities.

These activities involve strenuous exertions of strength using various muscle groups, some involve quick movements using speed and change of direction, and others involve sustained physical activity that places stress on the cardiovascular system.  The specific risks vary from one activity to another.

Before developing any exercise routine, it is important to evaluate personal health.  The best consultant in determining physical fitness is a professional physician.  The following questions from BGSU Recreational Sports Fitwell Lifestyles Program Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire (PAR-Q)  can help one self-assess their health

  • Has your doctor ever said you have a heart problem?
  • Do you frequently suffer from pain in your chest?
  • Do you often feel faint or have spells of severe dizziness?
  • Has a doctor ever said you have a joint problem such as arthritis that has been aggravated by exercise or might be made worse by exercise?
  • Is there a good physical reason not mentioned here why you should not follow an activity program even if you wanted to?
  • Are you over 65 and not accustomed to vigorous exercise?
  • Has your doctor ever told you that you have high blood pressure?
  • Have you ever been told you have a heart murmur?
  • Are you a smoker?

If the answer is "yes" to any of the above questions, the BGSU Fitwell Lifestyle Center's staff and the staff of the BGSU Student Recreation Center strongly advise seeking professional assistance while developing a personal exercise routine.  It is the sole responsibility of each individual to acknowledge the inherent risks associated with physical activity and participate in these activities voluntarily.
