Student Financial Aid
Financial Aid Checklist
Student Financial Aid (SFA) is pleased to provide this information to assist you in completing the financial aid application process.
![]() | Admitted and continuing students may use their BGSU identification number and BGSU e-mail account to view their personal BGSU financial aid status and financial aid award information on-line at https://my.bgsu.edu//. Information for the academic year will be available on-line. (See the SFA web site link to "Important Dates for Financial Aid" for specific information on deadlines.) |
![]() | If you do not already have one, apply for a Personal Identification Number (PIN) on-line from the U.S. Department of Education’s web site at http://www.pin.ed.gov/. The PIN serves as your electronic signature on your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and Federal Direct Loan Master Promissory Note. It also allows you to access your personal information in various Department of Education systems. If applicable, your parents may also need to request a PIN. |
![]() | Submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or renewal FAFSA to the federal processor as soon as possible after January 1. SFA strongly encourages you to use your PIN to file the FAFSA on-line at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/. BGSU's school code is 003018. |
![]() | Approximately two to four weeks after you submit your FAFSA, you will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) from the U. S. Department of Education that summarizes the data you reported on the FAFSA. Review your SAR for accuracy. If corrections are needed, use your PIN to make them on-line at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/. Keep the SAR for your records, do not submit it to SFA. |
![]() | Retain copies of your completed FAFSA, corrections you make to your FAFSA, and all IRS tax forms. Applicants for federal aid may be required to submit last year’s tax forms to SFA. |
![]() | When required, SFA will notify you to request additional documents that are needed to finalize your financial aid. Most documents may be downloaded and printed from SFA’s downloadable forms. |
![]() | Once SFA receives your completed FAFSA information and you have been admitted as a freshman or transfer student, a BGSU Financial Aid Award Letter will be mailed to you. Continuing undergraduate and graduate students will receive an e-mail via their BGSU e-mail account. All students may view their financial aid award and financial aid status on-line at https://my.bgsu.edu/. Read the Understanding Your Financial Aid Award brochure to obtain details about the funds you have been awarded. |
![]() | Promptly notify SFA in writing if you receive any scholarships, grants, loans or other forms of financial aid that are not listed on your BGSU Financial Aid Award Letter or Online Financial Aid Award Notification. |
![]() | New borrowers in the Federal Direct Loan program are required to complete an Electronic Master Promissory Note and Direct Loan Entrance Counseling session . You may complete both of these requirements on-line by accessing your personal financial aid information and following the instructions provided through https://my.bgsu.edu/ or directly access the Direct Loan Servicing Center at http://www.ed.gov/DirectLoan/. |
![]() | To apply for financial aid for the Summer session, in addition to the steps above, you must submit a Summer Session Financial Aid Application . This form may be completed online at the summer Financial Aid link on the left starting in mid-March. |
![]() | Parents of dependent students who wish to apply for a Federal Direct Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS) should annually submit the PLUS Loan Application to SFA beginning in May. The PLUS Application may be completed on the www.studentloans.gov website. A PLUS Master Promissory Note must also be completed by the parent prior to disbursement on the same website. |
