After you submit the FAFSA, a Student Aid report will be sent to you with your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) number. The EFC measures a family’s capacity over time to absorb educational costs and determines what type of aid eligibility you may receive, such as loans, grants, federal work-study and some scholarships. Your EFC is subtracted from the Cost of Attendance to the university (this includes direct and indirect costs) and the difference is your Financial Need. Once Financial Need is calculated, the Financial Aid Office determines which aid programs the student qualifies for and assembles various pieces of aid to help meet that need.
