STUDY AWAY/ABROAD ENGAGEMENT EXPERIENCES

Offered by UCF Community Development Center and the Arts Village
in collaboration with BGSU and the Office of Service-Learning

Study Away/Abroad Engagement Experiences are learning experiences that immerse students in other cultures for one to three weeks, where they learn about social justice issues and methods of community organization by living and working with community members.

The South Bronx and Navajo Reservation Engagement Experiences:

The UCF

Study Away/Abroad Engagement Experiences are offered by the UCF Community and Spiritual Development Center, a student center for social activism and personal growth. The Engagement Experiences have long been part of UCF’s mission to engage students in their communities and in communities throughout the nation; UCF has offered the South Bronx Engagement Experience since 1991 and the Navajo Reservation Engagement Experience since 1994. Please visit http://www.ucf-bg.com/main.html for more information about the UCF.

Credit Options

Participants may choose to earn credit from an Engagement Experience, though one can participate in an Engagement Experience without taking it for credit. Options include:

  • PACS 489: Field Experience Navajo Reservation or Field Experience South Bronx (3 credit hours): The Peace and Conflict Studies department awards PACS credit to students who follow the syllabus developed by the Engagement Experience directors.
  • You may set up an Independent Study with a professor of your choice. You will develop your curriculum and assignments with that professor.

Contact Bill Thompson, director of the UCF, at wthomp@bgsu.edu for more information.
