4th Annual Conference on Applied Learning in Higher Education
We are pleased to invite you to attend the 4th Annual Conference on Applied Learning in Higher Education, February 20-21, 2009, hosted by Missouri Western State University. Applied learning refers to student learning that occurs in non-traditional
contexts on college and university campuses. the following experiences are common examples of applied learning, but are not
meant to be exhaustive.

We invite you to submit proposals for poster sessions, symposia, roundtable discussions, or individual presentations on topics
related to applied learning and its development, administration, practice, assessment, or evaluation on your campus. This
two-day event is intended to bring together faculty and staff who are involved in applied learning across the country. The
presentation format creates opportunities for attendees to learn and gain skills as facilitators of applied learning experiences.
In addition to presentation opportunities, we are pleased to announce the following featured speakers at the conference:
Maryann Baenninger, President of the College of Saint Benedict, former Executive Board Member for the Council for Undergraduate Research
Patti Clayton, Director of the Center for Excellence in Curricular Engagement at North Carolina State University, Senior Scholar at the
Center for Service and Learning at IUPUI and Thomas Ehrlich Faculty Award Finalist
Nadinne Cruz, former Director of the Haas Center for Public Service at Stanford 2005 recipient of the National Youth Leadership Council's
Alec Dickson Servant Leader Award, and co-author of "Service-Learning: A Movement's Pioneers Reflect on its Origins, Practice,
and Future."
Timothy Elgren, Professor of Chemistry at Hamilton College, former President and member of the Executive Board of the Council on Undergraduate
Research (CUR), and co-editor of "Developing and Sustaining a Research-Supportive Curriculum: A Compendium of Successful Practices."
Dwight E. Giles, Jr. Co-author of "Where's the Learning in Service-Learning?" and "Service-Learning: A Movement's Pioneers Reflect on its Origins,
Practices, and Future," co-recipient of Campus Compact's 2003 Thomas Ehrlich Faculty Service-Learning Award.
The $125 conference fee ($100 if you register by December 15th) includes lunch, a reception and dinner on the 20th and lunch
