2008 The Thomas Ehrlich Faculty Award for Service-Learning 2008 BGSU Nominee Dr. W. Robert Midden Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry and Director of the Chapman Community at Kohl (the first
BGSU nominee for this award.)
Dr. W. Robert Midden has been instrumental in developing service-learning on our campus and in developing powerful student
learning environments that demonstrate the very best of our achievements as a university committed to public engagement, civic
participation, and critical thinking about values. His passion is considerable and he has given of his time and energy far
beyond the limits of any position requirements, always driven by his commitment to student learning, to excellent science
education, and to community engagement. As Bowling Green State University became active in the service-learning community
in the late nineties, Dr. Midden served as our first faculty liaison to Ohio Campus Compact and lobbied hard for our investment
and active engagement in this network. He has been a tireless activist for institutionalization of service-learning and civic
engagement activities, and chaired the committee we initiated in 2005. His participation resulted in the creation of a stand
alone Office of Service-Learning in 2006, focused on building our commitment to public work and student civic engagement.
He continues to be an advocate for curricular change and leads by example in his own teaching and commitment to pedagogy.
