Service-Learning Community Partnership Forums These discussion based programs bring community partners to campus to talk about their work, their connections with BGSU,
and the needs of their organization and clients. These sessions are designed to assist faculty, staff and students in learning
more about potential issues, needs, and partners in the community and to stimulate creative thinking about service-learning
courses, civic engagement projects, and possible areas for scholarship. All sessions take place at the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Technology @ 201 University Hall, BGSU
September ~ Tuesday 9/4/07 9:30 am – 10:30 am Adelante Sonia I. Troche, Executive Director & Maja Reed, Associate Director Adelante, the Latino Resource Center, is a Toledo-based organization that aims to serve Latinos in northwest Ohio and southeast
Michigan. Based on the belief that Adelante’s vision of a healthy and empowered Latino community can be achieved only through
a holistic approach, Adelante operates three divisions: Family and Community Resources, Children and Youth, and Health. In
addition to having comprehensive programs, Adelante has pioneered many partnerships within the community in recognition that
no single organization can satisfy all of the community’s needs. Many BGSU individuals, units, and student organizations have
partnered with Adelante, so join us to hear about these collaborations and areas of potential future partnerships. PathStone (aka Adalante) Website
September ~ Thursday 9/27/07 1:30 pm -2:30 pm United Way of Greater Toledo Tim Tegge, Director, United Way in Wood County, & Emily Murphy, Manager, Volunteer Center Interested in finding service and service-learning opportunities? Want to know more about how to find a community partner
or community resources? Interested in key community impact initiatives? The United Way of Greater Toledo, through its Volunteer
Center, Community Impact Programs, Volunteer Administrator activities, and its local Wood County office provides access to
important community networks that address these questions. As a key funder of community based programs, and its work in building
community capacity and marshalling resources to meet human needs, the UWGT is an ideal starting place for building campus
community collaborations. This program would be useful for students looking for ways to engage in the community or link their
organization with community needs, faculty looking for ways to access community partners and potential service-learning and
research projects, and staff who are interested in ways to engage and make a difference in our community. United Way of Greater Toledo Website
October ~ Thursday 10/25/07 4:00 pm -5:00 pm Kids Unlimited Lisa Gathard, Founder, & Chris Amato, Management Team Kids Unlimited is an innovative after-school and summer program for elementary schools located in the central city of Toledo. They
began a pilot program in 2005 at Englewood Peace Academy and by fall 2007 will also be working with Lincoln Academy for Boys,
Nathan Hale Elementary, and Lagrange Elementary. Kids Unlimited is committed to working with undeserved children in urban
communities to develop the academic, social and moral tools they need to realize their true dignity and potential. There is
a strong focus on supporting the academic curriculum, broadening access to new experiences, exploring good nutrition and exercise
(karate has been a big success!), and creating a community of respect. This program is very interested in exploring partnerships
with BGSU students, faculty, and staff and offers academic year and summer opportunities for student employment and internships.
