Service-Learning Faculty Focus Series These discussion based programs feature faculty talking about their service-learning courses and experiences working with all aspects of service-learning and civic engagement. All presentations take place at the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Technology @ 201 University Hall
September: Thursday 9/6/07 1:00 pm -2:00 pm Gordon Rickets, Director of Arts Village and School of Art & Bill Thompson, Instructor, Continuing & Extended Education Experiential, Transformational Learning Trips: Or two old (wise) guys take students on trips to places they might never go to on their own These two presenters hold extensive knowledge and experience of incorporating experiential learning with undergraduate courses
in both the arts and social work fields. Traditional academic content is transformed as students engage in pilgrimages to
Navajo reservations, the Bronx, and Peru as part of the study-away component of the traditional and not so traditional service-learning
courses. From gathering in talking circles around campfires to hiking through Machu Picchu, both presenters have innovative
ideas to share as they continue to incorporate experiential, transformational learning trips in their respective courses.
October: Wednesday 10/17/07 9:45 am -10:45 am Khani Begum, Associate Professor, English Department & Kate Collins, Instructor, Theatre & Film Department & Chapman Learning Community Report on the 2007 National Gathering of Service-Learning: The CSUMB Workshop Experience Returning from the recent Service-Learning Conference in Monterey Bay, California, these presenters will share their experiences
and discuss their developing ideas regarding connecting service-learning with curriculum design and pedagogy development for
the engaged college course. Dr. Begum has experience incorporating service-learning in her English course where the content
focus is on Middle Eastern women’s issues; whereas Ms. Collins’ theatre courses explore the implications of performance and
discussion of texts as situated in a culturally diverse society. Come listen to these presenters as they share their teaching
experiences and goals for incorporating service-learning in their respective fields.
Friday 10/26/07 11:00 am-12:00 pm Sansanee Ohlson, Instructor, Teaching & Learning Service-Learning for the Introductory Experience: Field Experience in EDHD 201 Every year, nearly 900 students engage in community based learning as part of their EDHD 201 Introduction to Education Class.
This team taught course is designed to not only help students decide whether or not to pursue the teaching profession, but
also to help impact a community agency during the discovery process. The 20 hours of service-learning take place at sites
that range from school districts/classrooms, local youth groups, Wood Lane residential programs, to coaching opportunities
and more. Come listen as Ms. Ohlson shares the experiences of her team utilizing a service-learning model in a large introductory
class, and approaches for assessment of students’ learning outcomes, particularly the ability to demonstrate knowledge of
the Pathwise Domains which are key components of the teacher preparation process.
