The Citizen Artist Community Engagement Project (CACE) is a 6-credit service-learning course offered by Kate Collins a faculty
member in the Department of Theatre and Film in Spring 2008. As part of this class BGSU students partner with students at
Libbey High School, a diverse urban high school in the south side of Toledo in the Toledo Public School District.
The semester-long course is broken into two segments. The first segment focuses on classroom work at BGSU as well as some
initial planning and relationship building visits to Libbey High School. During this important phase BGSU students explore
theory and pedagogy in relation to arts-based civic engagement and service learning, as well as study methods of using drama
in a social studies classroom. The second segment involves an intensive residency at Libbey where BGSU students work along
side of 11th grade Social Studies students towards the creation of a documentary theatre project focused on the theme of citizenship.
Workshops with the high school students involve training in interview techniques, developing theatre skills, exploring the
given theme, crafting interview questions, and shaping the project.
