The M3C Fellows Program

The Midwest Campus Compact Citizen-Scholar Fellowship (M3C Fellows) program, an AmeriCorps Education Award program, is as a scholarship program to support low-income and first generation college students who have demonstrated academic abilities while maintaining involvement and passion for community building through service and civic engagement activities. The program is a collaboration between Student Support Services and the Office of Service Learning, with support from the Martha Gesling Weber Reading Center’s America Reads program. The M3C Fellows program primarily targets second-year students in student support services who will serve for a year as America Reads tutors (or participate in another form of service) and participate in a year-long professional development course.
The M3C fellows provide 300 hours of direct service, over the course of one year, to meet the needs of the local community. Following their year of service, fellows receive a $1,000 education award. The fellows receive leadership training, academic and career advising, peer mentoring, and access to professional development opportunities. This program is funded by a grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service made available via Ohio Campus Compact.

In addition, the program provides support to achieve the following primary goals:

  • Improve the retention rates and academic success of low-income and/or first generation college students who are new enrollees or students transferring from two-year institutions to four-year undergraduate baccalaureate programs.
  • Develop a peer network and provide support that enables students to serve as agents of civic engagement to respond effectively to local community issues.
  • Provide support that builds the capacity of post-secondary institutions to serve as agents of civic engagement and respond more effectively to local community issues.
  • Foster a deep appreciation and understanding of democratic values and citizenship among participants, and nurture the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviors that lead to a lifelong commitment to active community and civic participation.
