America Reads

America Reads is a government-funded program in which Bowling Green State University participates. Undergraduate students with financial aid work-study status can apply to provide tutoring assistance to children within predetermined public schools. The program is housed in the Martha Gesling Weber Reading Center in the College of Education and Human Development.

(BGX) The BGeXperience

BGeXperience is the University's values program, designed to help all first-year students make a successful transition to college and jump start their college career. Through the BGeXperience values courses, students develop relationships that connect them to the BGSU community, and they begin to develop skills that prepare them to succeed academically. The BGeXperience consists of an intensive August introduction, consists of small groups of students, each led by a faculty member and a peer facilitator, who introduce incoming students to the University and its focus on critical thinking about values, expectations, community building and service learning. The second component of the program is a first year course on critical thinking about values offered in a variety of subject areas to be taken by all first-year students in their first semester. Limited to 25 students and taught by the faculty member who led the introduction group, this class builds on the bonds created during the intensive introduction to help students explore complex moral and ethical issues. Currently, further academic courses are being developed to link the BGeXperience with the curriculum within majors. The Office of Service Learning is collaborating with BGX to integrate service learning into the ongoing development of the BGeXperience.

BG Perspective, the general education curriculum classes, provide a solid foundation for active learning by providing students with both broad intellectual skills and breadth of knowledge to be more successful in their major area of study and later in their chosen professions. These skills include the ability to think critically and communicate effectively; the ability to understand different cultures, modes of thought, and multiple values; and the ability to investigate forces that shape the social, scientific, and technological complexities of contemporary culture. The Office of Service-Learning is collaborating with the BG Perspective to integrate service-learning into the ongoing development of general education courses at BGSU.

BGSU Research Institute

The institute is designed to help BGSU faculty, staff and students develop their research or creative ideas into marketable products, and to help find outside support and license those products.  The new research institute will also make a connection with the business and industrial community thru BGSU’s commercialization of its intellectual properties.

BGSURVE

BGSUrve is a program that introduces students at Bowling Green State University to service and leadership opportunities, resulting in a commitment to service, a sense of civic responsibility, and the improvement of the lives of traditionally under served populations.  Led by a team of fifteen students, BGSUrve includes a balance of large-scale one-time service Special Events and small-scale service projects.  Historically, BGSUrve has been responsible for planning activities such as Make-A-Difference Day, the Adopt-A-Family Campaign, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, and the Oxfam Hunger Banquet.  Through these opportunities, BGSUrve is vigorously working at student and community outreach in order to provide opportunities to all individuals wishing to serve.

(BTSU/Union) Bowen-Thompson Student Union

The Bowen-Thompson Student Union is an innovative, student centered facility and organization dedicated to the delivery of services and programs that enhance campus life and foster the Bowling Green State University Core Values. It is the main venue on campus for meetings and events.

The Center for Applied Technology
The Center for Applied Technology large format print lab is now open in its new location at 441 Woodland Lane Circle in the Wood Bridge Business Park behind the Meijer store.  The new campus phone numbers are 2-1093 and 2-9130.  The print lab can reproduce images up to 58” wide on a variety of media types, including: photo papers, fine art papers, vinyl banners, fabrics and canvas. 

(CFDR)  Center for Family and Demographic Research

The Center for Family and Demographic Research is a NIH-funded population research center dedicated to research, training, and service in demography. The CFDR integrates demographic methods, data, and perspectives with other social scientific approaches to understand the well-being of children and families. A special focus of research by CFDR affiliates addresses the public health and social problems facing at-risk children, adolescents, and families.  They can be a useful resource for grant development and research.

(CITE) Center for Innovative and Transformative Education

The Center for Innovative and Transformative Education is the primary agent in constructing and facilitating collaborative efforts designed to address critical educational, social, and economic needs. CITE is a major partner with PCA in the GEAR UP grant on the east side of Toledo. Service-learning was initially housed at CITE and PCA before becoming a stand-alone office.

Center for Regional Development

The Center for Regional Development is a chartered research center of BGSU. The Center's mission is to design and implement innovative and pragmatic solutions to a variety of regional challenges (i.e. predicting job openings in a specific Ohio region, or provide Ohio growers with a framework by which they can compete more effectively). The research team consists of a  group of scholars that contribute a special perspective and competency to the research.

(CTLT) Center for Teaching, Learning, and Technology

The Center for Teaching, Learning, and Technology is dedicated to supporting faculty and graduate student instructors who strive to achieve excellence in teaching through innovation, collaboration, and creative solutions. The Office of Service-Learning works closely with CTLT to provide professional development opportunities related to service learning and civic engagement.

The COMPASS Group - Community Organizing for Meaningful Personal and Social Stewardship
The COMPASS Group is a learning community associated with BGSU’s involvement in the AAC&U Core Commitments Leadership Consortium,  that brings together students affairs professionals (4), faculty members (4), and students (4) to help strengthen the integration of the five key dimensions into the core culture of the university as part of a Community Organizing for Meaningful Personal and Social Stewardship (COMPASS). The COMPASS group will be facilitated by Dr. Bettina Shuford, Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs and Director of the Center for Multicultural and Academic Initiatives, and Dr. Jane Rosser, Director of Service-Learning. The group will meet biweekly during the academic year 2007-2008 and in conjunction with 12 student organizations will develop projects that promote meaningful reflection and critical thinking about personal, social, community and civic engagement that exemplify Values in Action.  They will also identify existing University strengths related to student engagement, that promote the five dimensions and critical thinking about, and action related to, meaningful personal and social stewardship. Recommendations for programs and activities that could contribute to future growth in this area will be a desired outcome.

In spring 2007, BGSU was among 18 institutions chosen by the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) to participate in the Core Commitments Leadership Consortium. These schools will lead the first phase of a national initiative, Core Commitments: Educating Students for Personal and Social Responsibility. The initiative seeks to embed personal and social responsibility objectives pervasively across the institution as key educational outcomes for students, and to measure the impact of campus efforts to foster such learning.  The BGSU’s participation is being coordinated by Dr. George Agich, Director of the BGeXperience and a core leadership team which includes Dr. Jane Rosser Director of Service-Learning.

(COSMOS) Center of Excellence in Science and Mathematics Education: Opportunities for Success

COSMOS is a collaboration of Bowling Green State University, Owens Community College, numerous school districts and educational service centers, and businesses to improve mathematics and science education in Northwest Ohio. COSMOS aims to advance science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education for people of all ages. Their purpose is (1) to work with community partners to generate new knowledge about the science of teaching and learning, (2) apply this knowledge by developing the expertise of K-12 educators and higher education faculty, (3) increase public support for, and understanding of, the STEM subject areas, and (4) to stimulate the interest of young people, especially those in underrepresented groups, in these rewarding fields of study and career opportunities.

(CLC) Chapman Learning Community

The Chapman Learning Community is a living and learning community of approximately 200 students housed in Kohl Hall. CLC provides a close environment for student participants to work, learn, and live in close proximity with its own dedicated array of resources and faculty. Chapman’s curriculum has a strong community-based focus.  Chapman emphasizes community based and service-learning activities.

CSP is a Master of Arts degree program in College Student Personnel, offered by the Division of Higher Education and Student Affairs, and is designed to prepare individuals for employment within the general area of student affairs and student development services in postsecondary education. Candidates are prepared as generalists and are qualified for positions in such areas as admissions, orientation, residence life, student activities and organizations, counseling and career development, alumni affairs, financial aid, and placement. This program offers both rigorous academic preparation and extensive experiential learning opportunities. All students are required to successfully complete a two-year internship, which they may complement with additional practicum experiences. Through elective course work, students may also complete a specialized emphasis focusing on the needs of returning adult learners.

Communities of Science provides access to tens of thousands of current funding sources representing over $33 billion from international public and private sources for all kinds of activities. It is an online search engine and database that can help assist in finding external sources of funding. Requires registration. The Content Management System is the university’s software system for websites. The OSL website is managed via CMS. The Office of Web Development offers training for Rhythmyx Content Management System throughout the year with registration available online.

Dallas-Hamilton Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership

The Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership encourages creativity, self-reliance, and a “can do” attitude among business and non-business students through exposure to the entrepreneurship environment. It also builds partnerships, networks, and synergies within BGSU and with external organizations to promote entrepreneurial behavior as well as enhances economic development of the state and region by supporting entrepreneurship through educational and outreach initiatives and promotes an understanding and appreciation of entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial organizations.

Dining Services - Catering for Events

When planning an event at BGSU, University Dining Services and Catering attend to dining needs to provide a full range of catering and banquet services. Once you reserve space with the Bowen-Thompson Student Union, the Catering Arrangements Office assists you in planning luncheons, dinners, banquets, receptions and other special events. The staff will be happy to assist you in planning luncheons, dinners, banquets, receptions and other special events. To schedule a room or schedule an event in a non-residence hall facility you must call Event Planning and Reservations to reserve the room. After reserving the room, call and make your catering arrangements. Reservations should be made at least three weeks prior to your event. When booking your event you will need to estimate the number of guests attending. The sponsoring individual or group will be held financially responsible for the total guarantee, so plan carefully to avoid unnecessary charges. Booking are usually made by the budget manger so all fiscal liabilities can be tracked and authorized. On campus all catering for an event has to be provided by Dining Services.  

(ECAP) Ethnic Cultural Arts Program

Program at BGSU that offers a source of funding for production of art and cultural events with a focus on programs that highlight different ethnicities. Applicants may request grant amounts of up to 50% of their project budget. A maximum of $3,000 applies to all requests. Check ECAP’s website for application details.

A federally-funded $4.7 million grant project, administered by CITE, that helps provide educational and structural reform to East Toledo Junior High and Waite High School in Toledo, Ohio.  PCA is a partner in GEAR UP.

Graduate Success Program

The Graduate Success Program is an opportunity for public school teachers, counselors and administrators to work with students and staff while simultaneously pursuing graduate study.  Individuals in the program will be able to take 6 to a maximum of 12 semester hours of graduate credit.  Individuals will also spend 12-14 work hours a week in the summer, assisting program-area supervisors with activities such as tutoring, teaching and developing instructional materials.  Individual responsibilities will vary with program-area assignments and may include morning, afternoon or evening hours.  Traditionally 1 or 2 graduate success interns have served in the summer at the Office of Service- Learning.

Help-A-Child
Help-A-Child program is specifically designed to give all Educational Psychology majors at BGSU actual field experience. Ed. Psyc. students will have the opportunity to tutor school-age students (during regular school day) that need help in their academic subjects. BGSU students must provide transportation to their assigned area school and  can  receive 1 credit hour with a letter grade for their field work. If BGSU student is enrolled in EDFI 302 or 303, they register for EDFI 420. (HESA)  Division of Higher Education and Student Affairs

The Department of Higher Education and Student Affairs at BGSU is home to two graduate programs: the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Higher Education Administration and the Master of Arts (M.A.) in College Student Personnel. Information Technology Services plays a key role in supporting the University's effort to establish an environment in which the application of technology enhances and improves teaching, learning, research, and university operations. ITS provides technical support for all institutionally-owned computer systems. This includes several large-scale minicomputers, campus servers, workstations and desktop computer equipment in public labs and department offices. The department is also responsible for overseeing the installation and ongoing maintenance of the campus network and the campus phone system. (ICFP) Institute for Child and Family Policy

The Bowling Green State University Institute for Child and Family Policy represents the first program in Ohio aimed at providing explicit, non-partisan child and family policy research, analysis, and recommendations to legislators, legislative staff, state agency personnel, local policymakers and education and social service professionals throughout the state. The Institute aims to strengthen connections between research, child and family policy, and best practice models in Ohio through non-partisan summaries of topical family and child research, insightful policy analysis, program evaluation research, and community demographic profiles. Attention is directed to three key domains in a child’s life: schools, families, and communities.

(IDEAL) Interactive Distance Education for all Learners

IDEAL was established to promote distance education and assist faculty and staff with the development and design of web-based and web-centric credit and noncredit courses for BGSU. They offer an excellent three week class on online teaching at various times throughout the year.

The International Democratic Education Institute brings together BGSU faculty, community leaders and other educators from the US and abroad to promote democracy through education in such a way that students are provided the skills and knowledge necessary for them to perform their role as informed, responsible, committed and effective members of their respective democratic and political systems.

(IMS) Instructional Media Services

The office of Instructional Media Services is dedicated to a high standard of service in the production of quality presentations, graphic artwork, photography, videos and multimedia creations, as well as providing effective equipment for rental and timely distribution services to all students, faculty and staff of Bowling Green State University.
The services provided by IMS include the following:

  • A/V Distribution:   Audio visual equipment for reservation or rental.  
  • Technical Services:  Camcorder and digital camera rental, video/film from the    IMS collection, basic audio/video production, AV equipment repair, classroom and portable equipment (partial list).  
  • Graphic Art Services:   Design and creation of: PowerPoint®, Posters, brochures, flyers, poster session materials, table top displays, illustrations, graphs, charts, figures, graphic identity images. 
  • Photography Services:   Color and black and white prints, high resolution scanning, slides from computer image files, filmstrips, and other slides, Image CD’s and DVD’s. 

(KNOTS) Konnecting Northwest Ohio Through Service
A former grant project, administered by PCA, that established a youth grant-making council and helped area youth explore service-learning and philanthropy.  The Director of Service-Learning was the Director of this program.

(LSL) Literacy Serve and Learn 
Literacy Serve and Learn, housed in the Martha Gesling Weber Reading Center of the College of Education, has been in operation since Fall 1998. It is a collaborative effort between BGSU and Toledo Public Schools to provide Service-Learning opportunities for BGSU students while they provide instructional support in Toledo elementary schools. Several hundred BGSU students serve the Toledo Public Schools every semester through LSL. Participation in LSL is used in several different courses to meet service requirements.

Marketing and Communications

Marketing & Communications is responsible for developing and implementing marketing and communications plans and programs that support the University’s vision, priorities and goals. They publish the weekly Monitor along with other major publications, and compile the daily campus update.  

Martha Gesling Weber Reading Center

The Martha Gesling Weber Reading Center, located on the 5th floor of the Education Building at Bowling Green State University, houses various outreach programs, individual literacy assessments, intervention programs, and other literacy activities. The Reading Center provides graduate assistantships to students enrolled in the graduate reading/teacher education program. The Center also supports other graduate programs in the College of Education and Human Development and other BGSU education-related programs.

Midwest Campus Compact Citizen-Scholar Fellowship (M3C Fellows or M3C Program)
The MidwestCampus Compact Citizen-Scholar Fellowship program, an AmeriCorps Education Award program, is a scholarship program to support low-income and first generation college students who have demonstrated academic abilities while maintaining involvement and passion for community building through service and civic engagement activities. The program is a collaboration between Student Support Services and the Office of Service- Learning, with support from the Martha Gesling Weber Reading Center’s America Reads program. The M3C Fellowsprogram primarily targets second-year students in student support services who serve for a year as America Reads tutors and participate in a year-long professional development course. The M3C fellows provide 300 hours of direct service, over the course of one year, to meet the needs of the local community. Following their year of service, fellows receive a $1,000 education award. On top of the education award, the fellows will receive leadership training, academic and career advising, peer mentoring, and access to professional development opportunities. This program is funded by a grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service made available via Ohio Campus Compact.

(NOW I CAN) Northwest Ohio Working to Improve College Access Now

The Office of Campus Activities at Bowling Green State University offers a wide array of programs and services including leadership development programs, community service opportunities, student organization services and student activities. The Office of Research Collaboration was created to establish a partnership among researchers, practitioners, and the metropolitan community to develop new capabilities and work collaboratively to advance research in Northwest Ohio.  Their goals and outcomes include: to Increase opportunities for faculty at BGSU and UT to share and engage in common research interests, reduce barriers to collaboration, improve efficiency, and increase grant and research productivity, increase faculty involvement and public recognition of collaborative research, and to enhance faculty skills and, ultimately, increase external funding, technology transfer, and income to Northwest Ohio.

The Office of the Dean of Students is designed to aid the total development of students at Bowling Green State University through the coordination of campus activities and programs. The primary mission of the Office of Sponsored Programs and Research is to assist faculty, graduate students and staff members in all aspects of both internally and externally funded research projects and other scholarly activities. (PCC) Partners in Context and Community

A federally-funded $4.2 million grant project that helped develop BGSU student teachers through interaction with schools in urban high-need sections of Toledo.  PCA and CITE were partners in PCC.

(PCA) Partnerships for Community Action

Partnerships for Community Action is dedicated to redefining relationships between the University and the broader community through building and supporting campus/ community projects based on reciprocity, co-equal participation, and mutual benefit. PCA mobilizes ideas and resources from the University and the community that enhance equal educational opportunity, economic development, health and wellness, and cultural awareness for areas including, but not limited to, Northwest Ohio. PCA with CITE operate the PCA/CITE Partnership Support Grant Program to promote mutually beneficial and reciprocal partnerships by providing funding to university/community partnerships to address issues that concern both constituencies.

Partnerships for Community Action Dissemination Grant program

The Dissemination Grant Program is offered primarily so that members of the campus and the broader community will have support to explore and address how best to articulate and share the knowledge arising from their partnerships in order to create significant impact and further the collaborative process. The grant call asks that partners examine the knowledge produced in the project as well as the interests and purposes served by the project. Partners must illustrate how the knowledge from the partnership project is being disseminated so that it can be used by the target audience and all members of the partnership to better their life circumstances. Partners must also address how and why the members agreed upon the particular form or forms of dissemination. Applications due early December check the website for further details.

PCA/CITE Partnership Support Grant Program

The PCA/CITE Partnership Support Grant Program is a project of Bowling Green State University (BGSU) and reflects the commitment of the University’s President, Dr. Sidney Ribeau, to building strong community partnerships as part of BGSU’s dedication to civic development and democratic participation. (PAC) President's Advisory Council
The President’s Advisory Council is a key advisory group of administrators and faculty from all sectors of campus. It meets once a month on Wednesday mornings all year long. The director of OSL is a member of PAC. 

(PLA) President’s Leadership Academy

Project EXCITE provides sustained, reform-based professional development to guide teams of teachers through the process of creating and implementing an interdisciplinary learning module. These modules focus on: relevant and engaging topics for 4th -9th graders, local environmental health science issues , problem-solving and investigation skills, hands-on, minds-on learning.  In addition, Project EXCITE offers instructional resources and workshops for teachers hoping to be more involved with Problem Based Learning (PBL) or Environmental Health Science (EHS). Educators who are unable to participate in the active cohort can sign up for our one or two day workshops for an intense introduction to Project EXCITE.

The Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs is the chief academic officer of the university and is responsible for administrative leadership in all academic programs and services. The Provost articulates standards of quality and performance for the learning community, and provides for its continued enrichment. Together with faculty and staff, the Provost translates the University's core values into action, within a framework of priorities set by the University community.  OSL is a unit within the Office of the Provost.

(TOPS) Training Opportunities for Program Staff in Jobs in Family Services
A former grant project affiliated with PCA and CITE, TOPS in Job and Family Services was a training program designed for Ohio's job and family services employees to meet federally mandated requirements for employee training leading to college credit, and possibly, a college degree.

(WCC) Wood County Corps
Wood County Corps began in 2004 as a program designed to strengthen Wood County by promoting volunteerism and providing service to residents and communities through focused programs, outreach, and personal development in citizenship. WCC is funded by an AmeriCorps grant made available via the Corporation for National and Community Service and the Ohio Community Service Council. The program supports 30 national service positions at community organizations in Wood County. As of Fall 2007, WCC will be housed at the Wood County office of the United Way of Greater Toledo.
