Service-Learning Community Partnership Series These discussion-based programs bring community partners to campus to talk about their work as well as the needs of their
organization and clients. These sessions are designed to assist faculty, staff, and students in learning more about potential
issues, needs, and partners in the community and to stimulate creative thinking about service-learning courses.
*All sessions take place at the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Technology @ 201 University Hall, BGSU.

January ~ Wednesday 1/23/08 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm Bowling Green City 175th Anniversary 2008 Deanna Vatan Woodhouse, member of Planning Committee/Chair of BGSU Partnering Subcommittee & Joan H. Gordon, Chairperson for
175th Anniversary Planning Committee 2008 will be a special time for the City of Bowling Green because the town will be celebrating its 175th Anniversary. To plan
the Terquasquicentennial Anniversary, the 175th Anniversary has a steering committee of 28 volunteers who are working to plan a variety of events and activities. One of
the subcommittees is working directly with members of Bowling Green State University to promote the anniversary to the University
community and to facilitate connections between University and Bowling Green community celebration efforts. Deanna Vatan Woodhouse
and Joan H. Gordon will not only discuss the goals of the Anniversary, but how BGSU can partner with the event for service-learning
opportunities. Any faculty and staff members interested in incorporating service-learning projects relating to the anniversary
into their courses in 2008, especially the promotion of history and project development, would benefit from this presentation!
February ~ Thursday 2/14/08 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm The Community Partnership & CAPA City Kathy Schnapp, Project Manager The Community Partnership was founded in 1996 as a systemic coalition to bring community resources together to address alcohol,
tobacco, and other drug prevention and intervention issues to promote an environment that encourages healthy lifestyles. One
of the Partnership’s committees, the Coalition for Youth Enrichment (CYE), convenes with youth service providers to encourage
collaborative, inter-agency, cross-cultural leadership and activities to build a community that values and helps youth prepare
for successful adult lives. One of CYE’s specific projects is the enhancement of CAPA City, which is an interactive five-day
youth leadership conference in which teens are prepared for their present and future roles as involved, equipped community
leaders. Kathy Schnapp will discuss how the Community Partnership works with youth to accomplish these goals. The Community
Partnership has worked with BGSU to develop service-learning opportunities for those who wish to incorporate youth development
into their coursework and Schnapp will discuss those service-learning opportunities available to the BGSU campus. Any BGSU
faculty or staff member who focuses on youth development as well as substance abuse prevention in their courses would enjoy

March ~ Tuesday 3/18/08 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm Toledo GROWs Michael Szuberla, Toledo GROWs Manager Michael Szuberla will provide information about Toledo GROWs, a community gardening outreach program of the Toledo Botanical
Garden that involves close to 2500 citizens in Lucas & Wood counties in community gardening programs. Toledo GROWs helps low-income
participants cultivate fresh produce to support a healthful & affordable diet while building community pride and stewardship.
GROWs partners with neighborhood groups, public housing sites, community centers, churches, schools, and Head Start sites
and designs individual programs to help each partner fulfill their mission. In all cases, GROWs furnishes partners with the
knowledge & materials (seeds, plants, tools) necessary to create a successful garden. Toledo GROWs offers job training & mentoring
opportunities for youth in the juvenile justice system. Toledo GROWs has a wide array of youth gardens throughout Lucas County
and utilizes a variety of effective curriculums to teach horticulture, nutrition, self-reliance, health, teamwork and community
pride. Toledo GROWs has worked with many BGSU departments, including public health, environmental programs, and communications
and Szuberla will be able to discuss specifics ways in which Toledo GROWs and BGSU can continue to partner for service-learning
opportunities. Any BGSU faculty or staff member who focuses on health-related issues, art, education, and social work would

March ~ Tuesday 3/25/08 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm WSOS Community Action Commission, Inc. Joel Burg, Family Advocate WSOS is dedicated to creating opportunities that will help the Bowling Green community and all of its members to build a better
future. WSOS helps individuals and families to acquire the skills and knowledge to become self-sufficient and full participants
in the BG community. WSOS provides workshops, training and education for job development and placement, economic and financial
stability, life skills, and family support services as well as referrals to other partners within the BG community. Joel Burg
will focus on one WSOS program, the Family Works: Economic Stability for Fathers Program, which is designed to help fathers
from all walks of life to develop healthy and lasting relationships with their children while assisting fathers to develop
the tools needed to provide economic stability for their families. Burg will discuss the service-learning opportunities WSOS
offers BGSU, particularly to those with classes that focus on family development, economics, and social work. Although WSOS
has not partnered with anyone from campus before, the organization offers exciting opportunities for existing and new service-learning
