Dr. Jeff Howard
Associate Director, Service Learning
Edward Ginsberg Center for Community Service and Learning
University of Michigan
and
Editor of the Michigan Journal of Community Service Learning

Part 1:
Publishing Strategies & Opportunities

2:00 pm - 2:30 pm
As a precursor to the course development workshop, Dr. Howard will talk about the Michigan Journal of Community Service Learning and answer questions about publishing opportunities in the broader service-learning and civic engagement fields. Feel free to join us for this part of the program, but we hope you will stay for the full workshop.

Part 2:
Designing a Successful Service-Learning Course

2:45 pm - 5:30 pm
What precisely is service-learning?  We will discuss the essential components (relevant and meaningful service with the community, enhanced academic learning, and purposeful civic learning), its distinction from other forms of community-based learning, principles of good practice, aligning goals, learning strategies, and assessment methods, and provide examples. Participants will identify academic and civic learning goals for a prospective service-learning course.  We will also discuss publication opportunities, especially the Michigan Journal of Community Service Learning.

Attendees will leave with a clarified understanding of service-learning, confidence in knowing how to design a service-learning course, and clarity about where to publish their work.
