Office of Service-Learning
GreekSERVE August 2010
By Sharon Chittock, Volunteer Program Coordinator/Civic Action Leader
GreekSERVE was a chance for Greek Affairs and the Office of Service-Learning to collaborate in creating an event for undergraduate students who are returning Greek Leaders on-campus.
The Greek Leaders came a week before the fall semester began in order to participate in the service portion of the Greek Leadership Retreat called, GreekSERVE.
Students met bright and early in the student union and broke up into several different groups, and each group was assigned a different service location. One group stayed on-campus and pulled weeds and picked up trash in needed areas, another group helped coordinate a Carnival at Wood Lane. One group of students painted closets and washed windows at the local Red Cross building.
When students returned, they learned how to log their service hours for the Centennial Service Challenge, ate lunch, and reflected about their projects for the day. In a newspaper article by BG News covering the story, a student expressed that he felt more motivated to involve himself and his fraternity in direct service while he is at BGSU.
