Civic Action Leaders Accepting Applications for 2010
by Sharon Chittock & Paul Valdez

Are you or do you know someone who is passionate about social justice and civic responsibility? Are you eager to make a serious commitment in practicing these concepts? If so, the Office of Service-Learning encourages you to apply to be a Civic Action Leader for 2010.

We are seeking first-year students who are passionate about social justice and community involvement. Once accepted, each Civic Action Leader is expected to commit to the program for three years (Sophomore, junior, and senior academic years). The Civic Action Leaders will be committed to engaging in and creating volunteer activities for BGSU and the local community. While in the program, CALs will be able to participate and collaborate in professional growth opportunities and leadership development programs, series, and workshops. If you are interested in applying to be a Civic Action Leader, please pick up an application between 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 a.m. at the Office of Service-Learning, 315 University Hall beginning February 24, 2010. You may also download the application here. The applications are due no later than 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at 315 University Hall. If you have any questions about the application process and/or mission of the Civic Action Leaders, please e-mail Paul Valdez at paulv@bgsu.edu or call the Office of Service-Learning: 419-372-9865.

The current eight Civic Action Leaders are working on developing a service-learning classroom curriculum that will be implemented fall 2010. They are also continuing to work on a resource guide for the Office of Service-Learning which will list volunteer opportunities and community partner contact information. Please visit the Office of Service-Learning website to learn more about the exciting work of these Civic Action Leaders.

If you are interested in volunteer opportunities at BGSU or in the Bowling Green community, please e-mail civicactionlead@bgsu.edu for more information.
