Service-Learning Faculty Learning Communities at BGSU Benefiting from Collective Wisdom

By Allia L. Carter, Assistant Director of Curriculum Programs and Faculty Development

The Office of Service-Learning (OSL) and the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) have been hosting service-learning faculty learning communities since 2007. Since the inception of the Service-Learning Faculty Learning Communities (SLFLC) each cohort has established a track record of being effective at increasing student learning, engagement, and satisfaction.

The communities have served as a means to assist faculty in making a connection between theory and practice, while helping students “make sense” of course learning outcomes.

Join OSL and CTL on Wednesday, February 23rd from 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. for a brown bag discussion in 201 University Hall. This session will be presented by Jane Rosser, Director of the Office of Service-Learning and it will be an opportunity for you to learn more about teaching service-learning courses and how to qualify to be a member of our next 2011-2013 SLFLC cohort.

Past members of our communities shared the following benefits:

  • The opportunity to be a part of an organized, on-going, collaborative effort.
  • The two year cohort model is an excellent guide to facilitate faculty through all the phases of course development: research/planning, implementation, and evaluation.”
  • Helps faculty discover new creative outlets, networks, and partnerships.
  • An effective way to be more engaged in teaching and mentoring students.
  • Students in service-learning courses have greater coherence in what they learn and greater interaction with faculty, peers, and community partners.

To register for this brown bag Faculty Focus Series contact the Center for Teaching and Learning at 419-372-6898 or ctl@bgsu.edu  and for more information contact the Office of Service-Learning at 419-372-9625 or osladmin@bgsu.edu.
