In addition to the sworn police officers, the Department of Public Safety employs a student security staff that provides services for the University community. Campus Service Officers (CSOs) do not have statutory arrest powers, but work to assist police with security matters.

Lock-up Duties

CSOs are responsible for securing University buildings and patrolling areas of the campus not accessible by patrol cars. They must be aware of what is going on around them at all times. They are not to involve themselves in any type of confrontation; that is the job of the police officers. They are required to answer radio time checks along with the other working units. At the end of their shifts, they are required to fill out a lock-up sheet.

Training

Newly hired CSOs are trained by existing CSOs during regular working hours. They work along side the CSOs to learn the duties of Lock-up and Lot Patrol.

Equipment

Each CSO is issued a portable two-way radio and a set of keys when reporting to work. Lock-up officers are issued a set of door keys, and Lot Patrol officers are issued a set of keys for the patrol vehicle. Radios are used to communicate with the police dispatcher in case of emergencies or to answer a time check. Each CSO is issued a unit number to be used over the radio.

Safety

Safety cannot be stressed enough. CSOs are not police officers and are not expected to deal with situations for which they have not been trained or equipped to handle. If they have any doubt about something that they have seen or discovered, they should radio for a police officer.

Applications

If you are interested in becoming a CSO, open the application from the link below, fill in all the required information, print and sign it, and drop it off at the University Police Department located in the Commons. Hiring is done primarily at the beginning of fall and spring semesters, but applications are always welcome. If you have any questions, call 419-372-8816.
