Regarding: Recent thefts of laptop computers
In approximately the past 10 days the Campus Police received at least 7 reported thefts of laptop computers. In one case two
laptops were stolen from one room. In some cases other property was additionally stolen. Anyone with information regarding
these thefts should report it to the BGSU Police immediately. The locations of these thefts include the following:
- Offenhauer East
- Bromfield
- Ashley
- Compton
- Darrow
- The Jerome Library
- The Technology building
If your laptop is stolen you have not only lost the laptop itself, but unless you backed-up your important data you have lost
that as well. Plus, data contained on your hard drive could put you at risk of identity theft. The majority of responsibility
for the prevention of all thefts lies with the property owner. The following list offers some ways for individuals to prevent
the theft of their property, aid police in its recovery and lessen your chance of becoming the victim of identity theft:
- Do not let unknown people into residence halls.
- Lock your door when you leave your residence hall room.
- Do not leave your laptop, or other valuable property, unattended. Not even for one minute!
- If you have security cables for your laptop use them; if you do not have such a cable consider purchasing one.
- Engrave your laptop, or otherwise mark it in a way that cannot be removed to distinguish it as yours.
- Obtain and write down your laptop’s make, model and serial number and store that information in a safe place, apart from the
laptop.
- Encrypt sensitive data on your laptop.
There are other security measures available for laptops, such as biometric scanners, tracing software, password protection
of the BIOS and more. However, even these measures will not completely dissuade theft because if the laptop cannot be sold
by the thief as a whole it can be disassembled and the hardware parts can be sold separately. The very best security against
theft is your diligence in safeguarding your property!
