The CSO is one of the student groups run by the Department
of Public Safety.
This page includes information on the job duties of a CSO, as
well as a link to a printable
application.
Lock-up Duties
As a CSO you are responsible for securing University buildings
and patrolling areas of the campus not accessible by patrol
cars. You are to be aware of what is going on around you at
all times. You are not to involve yourself in any type of confrontation;
that is the job of the police officers. You are required to
answer radio time checks along with the other working units.
At the end of your shift, you are required to fill out a lock-up
sheet.
Training
Newly hired CSOs are trained by existing CSOs during regular
working hours. They work along side the CSOs to learn the duties
of Lock-up and Lot Patrol.
Equipment
Each CSO is issued a portable two-way radio and a set of keys
when reporting to work. Lock-up officers are issued a set of
door keys, and Lot Patrol officers are issued a set of keys
for the patrol vehicle. Radios are used to communicate with
the police dispatcher in case of emergencies or to answer a
time check. Each CSO is issued a unit number to be used over
the radio.
Safety
Safety cannot be stressed enough. As a CSO you are not a police
officer and are not expected to deal with situations for which
you have not been trained or equipped to handle. If you have
any doubt about something that you have seen or discovered,
you should radio for a police officer.
Applications
If you are interested in becoming a CSO, print the
application , fill in all the required information, and
drop it off at the University Police Department located in the
Commons. Hiring is done primarily at the beginning of fall and
spring semesters, but applications are always welcome. If you
have any questions, call 419-372-8816.
