Frequently Asked Questions
Is the campus patrolled 24 hours?
Yes. University police provide patrols and service 24 hours
a day, 365 days a year. University community members are encouraged
to call any time.
How safe is our campus?
While no campus can guarantee the complete safety of its
community, we play a major role together to provide the safest
possible environment. Your role is to take responsibility
for your own safety and security by making safety-conscious
decisions.
How safe are the residence halls?
University-owned residences can be safe places if we all
work together. Residence halls are patrolled by University
Police, night clerks and Campus Security Officers. Residents
should always close and lock exterior doors, never prop doors
open and report suspicious persons immediately. On-campus
residences are locations of constant activity, so if you notice
a door is not closing or locking properly, or that a light
fixture is out, notify a University housing or maintenance
official right away.
Who do I call if I live off-campus?
Call BG City Police for police service when off campus. However,
if service is needed while on campus, call University Police.
Who should I call for sudden serious illness or help for
an injured person?
Call University Police (911) for sudden serious illnesses
or help for an injured person. You should stay on the telephone
until the dispatcher obtains all needed information and instructs
you to hang up.
What should I do in the event of a fire?
Fire safety is everyone's concern. Each building is organized
with fire protection in mind. Familiarize yourself with fire
exits, extinguishers, pull stations and panic panels. Whenever
a fire alarm sounds, day or night, buildings are to be evacuated
immediately.
How do I protect my personal property?
There are several services available to aid in theft prevention.
We encourage you to see us about these programs. The Department
of Public Safety publishes and makes available to anyone a
brochure entitled "Protect Yourself Against Theft"
that offers sound advice on how to protect your property.
Stop by Public Safety or call 372-9925 for more information.
Are weapons allowed on campus?
No! The University prohibits weapons of any kind on campus.
How much theft occurs on campus?
Theft is by far the most commonly reported crime on campus.
There were 301 petty thefts reported to University Police
in 1999. Because theft is a crime of opportunity, victims
are usually singled out because of something they do to make
themselves easy targets. These crimes involve property left
unattended. Remove the opportunity for theft by locking your
doors, keeping track of your property and an eye out for strangers.
Don't leave valuables in your vehicle and report suspicious
activity to University Police.
What precautions should I take in regard to my bicycle?
Bicycles are a popular mode of transportation on campus and
may be worth several hundred dollars. Most bicycle thefts
can be prevented if the following precautions are taken: secure
your bike with a U-bolt one-piece locking mechanism, lock
your bike to a bike rack, and register your bike with BGSU
parking and traffic office or BG city police. A license can
be obtained for $3 and may be billed directly to your Bursar's
account. Once licensed, all the information required to identify
your bicycle is listed with both the City and University Police
departments.
Can I have a car on campus?
Yes. Your vehicle must be registered with Parking & Traffic
within 48 hours of your arrival on campus. Keep your car doors
locked, windows closed and valuables locked in the trunk out
of view.
Are there crime prevention programs on campus?
Crime prevention programs are offered year round to heighten
student and employee awareness of safety issues on and off
campus. See your hall director or call University Police at
372-9925 if you are interested in safety awareness programs.
