Human Relations Commission

PURPOSE:

To promote an atmosphere which will ensure all members of the university community receive fair treatment, as well as equal educational and professional opportunities.


FUNCTIONS:

  1. Promote an environment in which students, faculty, and staff work and recreate with dignity and respect;
  2. Promote academic freedom for all members of the community;
  3. Promote the exchange of intercultural ideas and values;
  4. Ensure that all members of its community are treated fairly and justly and that its affairs can be conducted in a collegial fashion with equal professional and educational opportunity for all;
  5. Provide an atmosphere in which positive and sensitive adjustments to social problems and opportunities are encouraged;
  6. Serve as the morally principled advocate for the interpersonal relationships essential to the University’s achievement of its objectives of conserving, disseminating, and advancing learning.

MEMBERSHIP:

  1. Shall consist of a variety of faculty and staff representatives appointed to one-year terms;
  2. One undergraduate student appointed by the Undergraduate Student Government to a one-year term;
  3. One graduate student appointed by the Graduate Student Senate to a one-year term.

EX-OFFICIO:

  1. Director of the Center for Multicultural and Academic Initiatives, or designee;
  2. Director of Equity and Diversity, or designee.

CHAIR:

The chair shall be elected by a vote of current Commission members.


OPERATING PROCEDURE:

All meetings shall be conducted within the framework of BGSU’s core values of respect and cooperation.


VOTING RIGHTS:

All members shall have equal voting rights.


REPORTING STRUCTURE:

The Human Relations Commission reports to the President through the Vice President for Student Affairs.
