Conference Helps Students Plan for Success
On October 16, 2012, Student Support Services (SSS), a federally-funded TRIO program providing academic and other support services for low-income, first-generation students, teamed up with professionals from Academic Affairs for this semester’s Success Conference. More than 125 students packed the Multipurpose Room to learn how to secure and manage the funds necessary for them to continue their coursework and graduate from BGSU. Holly Cipriani, Outreach Coordinator and Counselor with Student Financial Aid, focused on how students can maintain their academic eligibility for grants and loans; Patricia Donnelly, Program Manager with Student Money Management, presented strategies on budgeting; and Sidney Childs, Executive Director of the TRiO programs, explained a special grant aid opportunity that SSS has secured for students.
SSS staff members understand that, in the words of Hillary Clinton, “talent is universal, but opportunity isn’t.” They view the achievement of academic goals as a critical step towards future success for the first-generation, low-income students with whom they work. One SSS student at the conference noted how receiving the grant aid will help relieve the financial stress on her mother, who has one child at home and two in college. She stated the funds will ensure that she continues advancing towards her social work degree, a path on which she has embarked to give back to her community and work with children in need.
