Updates from Residence Life
Taste of February
On February 1st, more than 200 students, faculty, staff members, and guests kicked-off Black History Month 2013 at the Taste of February in the BTSU Ballroom. This annual event, sponsored by the Office of Residence Life, the SMART Program, the Black Graduate Student Organization, and the Office of Multicultural Affairs, featured an African themed dinner menu, a welcome from Dr. Mazey, and performances by the College of Musical Arts group LEVAS.
The theme of the program, E Pluribus Unum: Out of Many, One, was selected specifically to dovetail into the theme of the Black Issues Conference, which occurred the next day. The theme was intended to highlight the “many” different experiences of notable Black alumni that helped make the Black student experience the “one” that it is today. Using a variety of technologies and presentation styles, student staff from the SMART Program developed presentations centered around Academics, Leadership and Administration, Student Life, and Athletics. SMART student staff also provided a reflection and wrap-up session at the end of the event. The evening was a way to begin celebrating the many Black History Month events being held around campus in February. Additional information about Black History Month events can be found here.
RA Selection 2013 - 2014
Resident Advisor (RA) recruitment and selection for the 2013-14 academic year is underway! In October 2012, Residence Life began recruiting potential RA candidates by inviting them to information sessions around campus. There has been an overwhelming interest in the position this year! More than 500 students attended one of the twelve information sessions offered in October, November, and December. Of the 306 students that submitted applications, nearly 250 were offered first-round interviews.
First-round interviews for new applicants took place on Thursday, January 24th and Friday, January 25th. There were nearly 120 current and returning RAs that went through a separate interview process on January 26, 2013. Abby Priehs, Assistant Director of Residence Life and RA Recruitment and Selection Committee member, stated, “We are really pleased with the excitement of our RA candidates and are looking forward to the upcoming year.” Residence Life would like to thank everyone campus wide who assisted with RA interviews!
