Integrative Learning: Addressing the Complexities

Dr. Joe Oravecz, Bonnie Fink, and Dr. Langendorfer

Dr. Joe Oravecz, associate vice president for students affairs, Dr. Bonnie Fink, Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning, and Dr. Steve Langendorfer, Director of BG Perspective and Professor of Kinesiology recently presented at the American Association of Colleges and Universities conference, “Integrative Learning: Addressing the Complexities” held in Atlanta, Georgia October 22-24.  A featured LEAP (Liberal Education and America’s Promise) session at the conference, their presentation “Why not a center of excellence for the Essential Learning Outcomes?” focused on how BGSU's Connecting the Undergraduate Experience initiative came about in relation to the University’s strategy of linking the curricular and co-curricular learning environments.

The presentation focused on the conceptual learning model just presented to the BGSU campus community last week. It explained a proposed integrated, coherent, institutional structure that demonstrates and documents integrative learning and adds value for BGSU students, while speaking to an emerging statewide and national vision for quality transformation in higher education. During the session, participants learned more about BGSU’s move towards intentional integrative learning between academic affairs and student affairs; gained an appreciation for the need to integrate academic and co-curricular campus areas; and allowed an opportunity for participants to give feedback on the conceptual learning model and other elements of the proposed revision of The Bowling Green Experience.
