Congratulations to Dr. Bettina Shuford, associate vice provost, who has been selected as the inaugural recipient of the NASPA Foundation’s Zenobia Hikes Scholarship to attend the 2010 Alice Manicur Symposium, sponsored by the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA). The Manicur Symposium, established and coordinated by NASPA's Center for Women, is designed for women in mid-level managerial positions who are contemplating a future move to a senior student affairs officer (SSAO) position. Participants join other experienced student affairs professionals, from community colleges, two-year and four-year public and private colleges and universities to engage in workshops led by innovative and knowledgeable faculty members with diverse backgrounds. Symposium sessions focus on such topics as strategic thinking, leading change, planning for career advancement and continual development, and personal and professional life balance.
The scholarship is named in honor of the late Dr. Zenobia Hikes, past Vice President for Student Affairs at Virginia Tech, who was instrumental in providing strong and effective leadership at VT immediately following the 2007 campus massacre, and who became an expert voice in the profession for administrative leadership in campus crisis management.
According to NASPA, Bettina’s “professional and civic achievements over a number of years has demonstrated the essence of Dr. Hikes’ philosophies of safe campuses and ethically engaged women leaders in Student Affairs.” We are very proud that our own Dr. Shuford is the first to receive this outstanding recognition. Congratulations, Bettina!
