Division of Student Affairs
17-Years of Student Affairs
When Dr. Edward Whipple first came to Bowling Green State University in 1994, he admits he only planned on staying a few years. Seventeen years later, the vice president for student affairs is leaving the University to become the first senior fellow with NASPA - Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education. According to the organization, Whipple will help NASPA explore opportunities for collaborations between academic and student affairs and examine significant policy issues facing the profession. "I'm looking forward to working with other campuses, helping with key higher education initiatives, and hopefully being able to mentor and educate future student affairs professionals," Whipple said. Among his many accomplishments, Whipple helped lead the development of the Bowen-Thompson Student Union. He was also successful in increasing BGSU's focus on multicultural affairs and heightening the campus community's awareness of diversity issues. His office focused on developing learning communities and increased the number of student organizations from 175 when he arrived to over 325 today, as well as created a comprehensive leadership program and the Center for Leadership. "I would attribute any accomplishments to a number of people who believe in the importance of a strong, supportive learning experience for students," Whipple said. "I hope I have been able to raise the awareness of the importance of the student affairs-academic affairs collaboration and show that the synergy of us working together is much more powerful than working separately." "Dr. Whipple was instrumental in drawing attention to the value and importance of out-of-classroom experiences at the University," said President Carol Cartwright. "We're proud of his efforts in helping us create a positive living-learning environment for student success." "Due to a strong faculty and staff who focus on students and their learning, I do know this place makes a difference," Whipple said. "I also know the University will not lose sight of its long-standing tradition of 'putting students first' and hopefully never underestimate the role of the 'personal connection.' Each faculty or staff member - wherever he or she works on campus - can make a huge difference in a student's life." source: PhiDeltaTheta Important Dates:
