AFLV Greek Leadership Conference

On February 10, 38 students and nine staff members from Fraternity and Sorority Life traveled to St. Louis for one of the largest annual Greek leadership conferences in the United States—Association of Fraternal Leadership and Values Central Conference (AFLV Central) and the National Black Greek Leadership Conference (NBGLC).  This year, attendance at the combined conference exceeded 2,000 participants.

Fraternity and Sorority members from BGSU were excited to share their experiences with other conference attendees from the region.  In a series of workshops and pathway sessions, the students were encouraged to think critically about the intersection of their values with leadership, interactions with advisors and headquarters staff, and to learn from the experiences of their peers.  This year, students and staff alike were challenged to take risks in order to create positive, meaningful change in their Greek and campus communities.

Developing collaboration and understanding across councils and organizations was a major theme of the conference.  BGSU’s delegation embraced this theme with representation by students from all four governing Greek councils.  In an effort to promote collaboration across councils, our students registered a team to compete in the annual Step Show—late night programming offered by AFLV to promote education about historically Black and Multicultural Greek traditions.  Members of the National Pan-Hellenic Council, the governing body for our historically Black Greek organizations, performed their unity step in front of a sold-out audience.  They were also joined onstage by women from BGSU Panhellenic organizations, and the performance they gave earned them second place recognition out of eight registered teams.

The BGSU delegation partnered with Order of Omega, the national Greek leadership honorary, for the twentieth year to perform an honorary initiation for individuals who work or volunteer with fraternities and sororities.  We initiated ten professionals and volunteers and recognized them for their outstanding service to Greek organizations.  The following students conducted the ceremony:  Larry Serfozo, Brittany Hartory, Eddie Hackler, and graduate assistant, Scott Konkol.

A first for the BGSU delegation this year included the nomination and subsequent finalist status of the Panhellenic Council for the Kaleidoscope Award for Innovation, an award that recognizes innovative programming among Greek councils.  BGSU’s Panhellenic Council was a finalist for its successful program, “Defining Your Panhellenic Experience.”  The council was also recognized for efforts in community service and public relations.  The BGSU Interfraternity Council was recognized for excellent council management.

We look forward to the positive results this momentum will have on the BGSU Greek and campus communities.
