Consolidation Policy

Room Consolidation Policy for Fall 2011

Room consolidation is a procedure through which the Office of Residence Life provides the maximum amount of space to students in the residence halls. The process affects students who live alone in a double occupancy room, which occurs when a roommate does not arrive or a roommate moves out of the room.

Due to limited space within our residential buildings, at certain times during the academic year it is necessary to consolidate residents by reassigning them to new rooms/suites. The purpose of the policy is to ensure spaces for incoming students and rectify the inequitable condition which exists when many students end up living alone (without roommates) in rooms traditionally designated as double rooms/suites. Students living in a room/suite with a vacancy will receive correspondence from the Office Residence Life describing the consolidation options.

Residents in standard double rooms (McDonald, Kohl, Conklin North, Harshman and Kreischer) have the following options when they occupy a double room without a roommate:

  1. Self identify another person to be a new roommate.
  2. Buy-out the room as a single room: The single room rate is approximately $500.00 more per semester than the double room rate (click here for Housing Rates). The charge will be prorated for number of days remaining in semester based on move date. Furniture will remain in room and will not be removed with the buy-out option.
  3. Be consolidated with another person on the same floor who does not have a roommate. The resident with less credit hours will move in with the resident with more credit hours. If both residents have equal number of credit hours, resident with later housing deposit date will be required to move.

Residents in Founders Hall have the following options when they occupy a double room without a roommate:

  1. Self identify another person to be a new roommate.
  2. Buy-out the room as a single room: The buy-out rate in Founders Hall is the super single rate of $3,300 per semester. The charge will be prorated for number of days remaining in semester based on move date. Furniture will remain in room and will not be removed with the buy-out option.

Residents in Offenhauer Towers have the following options when they occupy a double room without a roommate:

  1. Self identify another person to be a new roommate.
  2. Be consolidated with another person on the same floor who does not have a roommate. The resident with less credit hours will move in with the resident with more credit hours. If both residents have equal number of credit hours, the resident with later housing deposit date will be required to move.

All residents affected by this policy will receive communication from the Office of Residence Life and must respond by the due dates listed to receive their choice of action.

Any rooms that become completely open after this process can be purchased as single rooms. No furniture will be removed and the room will remain a single for the entire academic year.
