Game of the Week E-Form
5-PLAYER BASKETBALL -Men’s Competitive League   Thursday, February 21
Average Joes (6-1)  55    Ballin’ (6-1)  51

The Average Joes secured their pictures on the Field House Wall of Champions as the winner of the Men’s Competitive League for 2008. They bested their division rival Ballin’ by a score of 55-51 late Thursday night for the championship.

Behind the Joes triple threat of Anthony Turner, Kolby Harruff, and Michael Ream each had 14 points. The Joes trailed most of the first half, were kept afloat by the hot shooting hand of Ream. Turner and Harruff took the reigns for the eventual champs in the latter half. Turner you may recognize as BGSU Football’s former starting quarterback and current all-purpose offensive player. In addition to Turner, Ream is a defensive lineman for BGSU’s football team.

The up tempo second half saw 4 lead changes within the first 5 minutes, however the deep shooting from Turner and Karruff’s good use of the free throw line saw the Average Joes pull ahead by 9 points, the largest margin of the game. Ballin’ kept the game close with energetic defense and timely 3-point shooting led by game high scorer Brandon Oney, who had 19 points on the night.

Ballin’ did not help their comeback chances with a late costly technical foul, an ill-advised non-existent timeout for another technical, and failing to foul the Average Joes late in the game. The Joes at the time led 50-46 proceeded to run one minute off the clock before Ballin’ finally fouled them with less than a minute left in regulation. Harruff missed the front end of a one and one, but fittingly earned a charge only seconds later at the other end of the court.

On top of winning the championship, the Average Joes spoiled Ballin's perfect season. Both teams finished with 6-1 overall records, and 1-1 against each other on the season.

5-PLAYER BASKETBALL - Women Open Comp. League   Wednesday, February 13 @ 9:00pm
Hustlenomics (4-0) 39   Ball Bustas (2-2) 34

Hustlenomics completed their undefeated regular season campaign in the women’s competitive league Wednesday night, besting the Ball Bustas, 39-34. Hustlenomics were led by the dominant performance of forward, Carin Horne, who had a game high 15 points. With just over 5 minutes remaining in the game, Horne scored 7 straight points, capped by a key steal and pull-up three pointer, to give Hustlenomics a 33-30 lead that they would never relinquish. Forward Makoyia Jenkins kept the game out of reach with crucial offensive rebounding and 4 of her 6 points coming in the final 2 minutes.

The first half saw streaky action from both teams. Betsy McGory halted a 7-minute scoreless draught for the Ball Bustas, which in turn, ignited them on an 11-point run led by Megan Bodnar and Alexa Nasonti. Rachel Thobe was the Ball Bustas high scorer with 8 points. The half would then swing back to Hustlenomics, who ended the half on a 7-point run behind the slashing of Jasmine Perdue and a late three pointer from Brianna Patman. The late first half surge would turn out to be exactly what Hustlenomics needed, because each team would match baskets for 17 points apiece. “Everyone did their part,” Perdue said.

5-PLAYER BASKETBALL - Men Open Competitive League   Monday, February 4 @ 9:00pm
Church League All-Stars (3-0) – 49    98 Bulls (2-1) - 42

In the battle of the two undefeated teams, The Church League All-Stars kept their foot on the gas pedal long enough to outlast the 98 Bulls Monday night, 49-42.

Former BGSU varsity basketball player Kris Wilson led all scorers with 13 points on the night for the All-Stars. Despite Wilson’s hot hand he attributes his success to the team,  “I’m just fortunate to play with a great group of guys,” Wilson said. The All-Stars also got help from Brandon and Eric Radabaugh, with Brandon chiming in for 11 points and Eric’s superb rebounding on top of his 9 points. Blaise Markey had a key steal at the end of the game, as well as all of his 9 points coming from behind the arc.

Bulls captain Andre Boomer believed the game was not as much won by the All-Stars, rather lost by the Bulls. “The Giants beat the Patriots on the court tonight,” he said. “If we play them 10 times, we’d beat them 9, but we’ll see them in the playoffs,” Boomer added. Despite Boomer’s frustration, there is some validity in his disdain. The Bulls came up empty at free throw line 9 times in the second half before Roger Williams finally ended the draught. They also were the victims of 5 straight misses on one possession in the final minutes, when the game was still within reach. On top of their struggles, the All-Stars managed to control the ball for nearly four of the final five minutes. Adrian Hodges led the Bulls with 11 points, including a late 3-pointer to keep the game close. Trevor Winston also came up 10 points.

With the victory, the All-Stars (3-0) took over sole possession of first place in the division for the Men’s Competitive League. The Bulls now sit at second place, with a record of 2-1.

5-PLAYER BASKETBALL - Fraternity A League   Monday, February 4 @ 10:00pm
Sigma Phi Epsilon (2-1) – 44     Phi Kappa Tau (1-2) – 42

Brian Guerin recovered from his woeful offensive night with a pair of free throws in the final 10 seconds to vault Sigma Phi Epsilon to a 44-42 victory. The Phi Kappa Tau’s had 6 seconds after Guerin’s free throws, however with 2 fouls to give, Guerin fouled Phi Kappa Tau guard Colin Foster twice to drain the clock down to 2 seconds. Zacory Feasby’s, who’s 3-pointer tied the game at 42 in the final 30 seconds, threw up a desperation 3-pointer that hit the front of the rim as time expired.
