ATTIRE AND EQUIPMENT
Skaters should dress in warm clothing that permits freedom of movement and will need tight fitting mittens or gloves, no matter
the outside temperature. Layers are recommended while blue jeans, shorts, and heavy winter coats are not. Skaters need to
be comfortable in a wide range of motion and instructors need to be able to see and correct body positioning.
All Group Lesson participants must wear a properly fit pair of ice skates with sharp blades. The rental skates are included
in the cost of the Group Skating Lesson. For Public of Cheap Skates, rental skates of all sizes are available through the
Skate Shop at a nominal fee of $2.50 per use for ages 13 and up, $2.00 per use for ages 4 – 12 and $1.00 per use for tots,
3 and under. Skate sizes generally run 1 to 1.5 sizes smaller than street shoe size, except for toddlers who frequently need
to move up one size from street shoes. Instructors will verify the fit of all equipment on the first day of each lesson series.

If you are interested in purchasing your own boots and blades; a quality pair of beginner skates for young children will cost
between $50.00 - $120.00. Ask at the Skate Shop to see sample models or take advantage of our special Riedell Fitting Days
held once in the Fall semester and once in the Spring semester. Most importantly, it is highly recommended that new buyers
seek professional advice on fitting before purchasing ice skates!
A bicycle helmet is required for ages 3 and 4. Helmet and gloves are required for hockey classes.
Practice ...makes perfect, as the saying goes. It is extremely important to practice on a regular basis to review new skills and to build
the confidence necessary to progress from one level to the next. Refer to the Main Ice Schedule link to the left or check the boxes by the Skate Shop for available Public Skating or Cheap Skate times. Your electronic practice
pass may be punched at these sessions for free admission! The pass is issued to the skater enrolled in lessons, it is not
transferable to other family members or to guests.
