In the sport of figure skating, there is really only one necessary piece of equipment, figure skates. The proper fit and proper
quality of skates will ensure safety for the skater as well as the best return on lesson and ice time dollars. There are a
wide variety of figure skates and blades available, ranging from a $30.00 department store skate and blade combination to
a $700.00 pair of custom boots outfitted with a $300.00 pair of blades. A good rule of thumb for the advanced beginner is
to plan to spend at least two time the price of a quality pair of sport shoes (around $130.00 for children and around $160.00
for adults). Children thinking of individual or synchronized team competitions, or adults (whose feet are no longer growing)
who plan to skate recreationally for years to come should consider a higher quality boot and blade combination.
A true fit is usually 1 to 2 sizes smaller than a street shoe and varies greatly depending on width and the intended use of
the skates. Skates are an extension of the skater's foot and should fit like a glove fits a hand. The heel and instep area
will be held tightly, the toes will sit flat and have limited movement. In some cases, a small amount of growing room (usually
enough for one season) can be allowed. Expert advice is available at the Skate Shop or by speaking to a skating professional.
