GOLF PLAYER PROFILE: JOHN POWERS
Story by Jeffrey O McManamon, BGSU Student
Recreational Sports Public Relations - Spring 2008

The BGSU men’s golf team quietly put up a solid first half performance to the 2007 leg of their 2007-08 campaign. Team captain Jace Walker has been having a stellar senior season, however it is the other role players, like sophomore John Powers, who have stepped up and contributed to the team’s success.

Powers has followed up his impressive freshmen year with an up-and-down sophomore season, however 10th place finish at the MAC/Big East Challenge to conclude his 2007 leaves an encouraging outlook for 2008.

In his freshmen year, Powers stepped right in and finished the year second on the team with a 75.60 stroke average. He won his first tournament in the final week of April, besting the field by one stroke to take the University of Dayton Spring Invitational. The performance earned him MAC Golfer of the Week honors. He finished the year with a top 25 finish in the MAC Championships, highlighted by a hole-in-one on the final day.

There is more than just a low handicap to the 19 year-old. His humble personality and long hair that flows from underneath his baseball cap paint him more as the boy next door rather than varsity athlete. Despite his athletic build, the 5’9 listing of him on the University’s athletic web-site is very generous. When asked if his size was a disadvantage to him in golf, Powers responded, “the game has changed, and power is much more of a factor. But small guys can still compete.”

Powers also draws some extra strength from his hockey playing days. “Hockey helps, it has definitely made me stronger,” he said. “I also love hockey because it is a nice break from golf, I still play about 3 to 4 times a week.”

Powers, a sport management major, also works part-time at Mr. Spots, and referees the in-house ‘Slo-Puck Hockey League’ at BGSU. He is the oldest of three children.
