BGSU GROUPX CLASSES Story by Ashley Ruff, BGSU Student Recreational Sports Public Relations - Spring 2008
Are you looking for a fun and exciting way to get fit with your friends? Does every minute spent on a treadmill or bicycle
feel like an eternity as you watch the time count down to the conclusion of your workout? If you are looking for upbeat workouts
that leave you feeling confident and wanting more, group exercise classes may be the perfect fit for you! Available at the
Student Recreation Center (SRC) are various group exercise classes scheduled each day of the week to fit every busy schedule.
Each group exercise class is tailored to focus on a specific area in order to help each participant achieve their physical
fitness goals.
Among the different group exercise classes offered at the SRC are Ab-Solute 30, AeroSpin and Zumba. “ These classes are each
very different but still have the same results, using one’s body to challenge, tone, and increase their physical activity,”
says Jacqueline McMillan, a graduate assistant of the Fitness program at the SRC.

Ab-Solute 30 puts a modern twist on the traditional sit-up by combining a variety of movements that will leave your midsection
feeling strong and toned. Participants of Ab-Solute 30 said this class provides you with a variety of abdominal exercises
that one can easily perform at home. Be sure to arrive to this class early in order to claim your spot, it is absolutely one
of the most popular classes offered at the SRC.
Aerospin, a favorite class among many students and group exercise instructors, allows you to gain some momentum on the average
exercise bike. Spinning I McMillan’s favorite class to instruct because of the motivation and energy that comes from her participants.
During AeroSpin, participants will peddle to a variety of music that will motivate them to increase their speed and momentum
until the cool down of the workout. AeroSpin participants agree that this class puts a spin on stationary cycling that is
fun and exciting. AeroSpin is first come first spin so don’t be late!
Zumba is the perfect class to get your feet moving. This class is combination of aerobics and fitness training that participants
will learn to execute through multiple dance themes. Zumba will sculpt and tone your body in rhythm to the energizing beat
of Latin and International music. Dance your way into Zumba when you need a little spice in your life.
Yoga and Pilates, great for relaxing the mind, body and soul, are available at the SRC for a low fee of $10.00 per month.
These classes are comprised of different flexing and stretching exercises that work to elongate each major muscle group in
the body. Yoga and Pilates focuses on total body control through deep concentration on each and every exercise movement. This
class does not measure success on the quantity of movements performed but rather on the detail to which each movement is performed.
Student employees in the Fitness area instruct the group exercise classes offered at the SRC. Each instructor is dedicated
to providing workouts that are enjoyable and fun yet challenging and beneficial. “Group-X classes help give participants that
extra push to keep working hard and not give up. We provide motivation to keep their mind off of working out and focus on
having fun while doing something good for their health. We take a 45-minute workout and try to turn it into a fun exercise
session that feels like 20 minutes of actual hard work. We have the knowledge and skill to teach others how to be physically
active. It’s a great feeling to see participants leave feeling like they had a really good workout and can’t wait to come
back for more,” McMillan explains. These classes are designed and instructed so that working out does not feel like a chore
or difficult task, but leaves participants feeling happy and accomplished.
All group exercise classes offered at the SRC are described separately on the Group-X Schedule page. Check out the different class descriptions or even stop by the SRC and decide in person which class is for you.
