Sidney A. Ribeau President's Leadership Academy

PURPOSE 

The first year curriculum engages scholars in academic and personal growth, focusing on self-exploration and defining the role of the participant within the group dynamic. This year is the most critical for new scholars; thus, the curriculum was partially developed by colleagues in the First Year Experience Program and the Counseling Center. The goals of the first year curriculum extend from the Summer Program and take into consideration the educational, social, and personal challenges inherent in the first year of college:

• Develop essential academic skills
• Instill the value of student and faculty interaction
• Develop analytical and critical thinking skills
• Clarify values and explore ethical issues
• Develop adequate oral and written communication skills
• Participate in one student organization
• Understand the link between leadership and service to others
• Explore the purpose of higher education and the institutional mission
• Provide an introduction to campus rules, regulations, policies, and procedures

PROGRAM COMPONENTS

• Seminar Course (BGSU 1000) – fall semester
• Speech Communication Course (COMM 1020) – either semester
• Participation in PLA Pals Program (as mentees)
• Cohort Meetings – identity development, values clarification, leadership development (including leadership vs. management), group development, reflection and assessment
• Community service
• Exploration of leadership development texts

LEARNING OUTCOMES At the end of the first year, scholars should:

• Begin to view situations in shades of gray and not black or white
• Espouse personal values
• Discuss the benefit received from a meaningful relationship with a faculty member
• Participate in group discussions, letting others set the direction
• Demonstrate leadership skills learned
• Self-assess gains in oral and written communication
