Public Health Preparedness

The University recently has received questions from concerned parents, staff and others about its ability to respond to a serious health emergency. These concerns have been heightened by reports in the local and national media about the nation's public health preparedness.

In our continuing efforts to keep you informed about issues like this, the University's visions of Public Safety, Environmental Health and Safety, University Police, Student Health Services and Student Affairs are publishing the following information to address the concerns raised about our preparedness to deal with this type of situation.

First and foremost the University is committed to the health, safety and well being of its students, faculty and staff. University administrators have planned for a variety of emergency situations, some of which are often unique to a university setting. BGSU has professional, experienced staff members who are prepared to respond to emergency situations that might occur. Many are experts in their respective fields and provide their expertise to the local and regional communities.

In the unlikely event of an extraordinary occurrence, we also can rely on the resources of other agencies. The University has close and collaborative working relationships with the City of Bowling Green, the Wood County Hospital, the county's Emergency Management Agency, and the Wood County Health Department. Regular information exchanges and updates between appropriate University departments and these organizations ensure that critical communications and planning are in place to react quickly to address emergency situations. For example, these agencies, along with the University, currently are reviewing existing emergency response procedures as well as evaluating and implementing new ones that have been necessitated by recent national events. As a result we are prepared to respond immediately to public health or safety issues along with our professional colleagues in the community.

We appreciate your cooperation and if you have any questions, please call Public Safety at 419-372-2346 or Environmental Health and Safety at 419-372-2171.
