The National Pan-Hellenic Council, Incorporated (NPHC), is the governing body for historically Black Greek letter organizations. The NPHC is currently composed of nine (9) International Greek letter Sororities and Fraternities: Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc., Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. NPHC at BGSU is currently comprised of seven of the nine NPHC fraternities and sororities in North America, including ΑΚΑ, ΑΦΑ, ΔΣΘ, ΚΑΨ, ΩΨΦ, ΦΒΣ and ΖΦΒ.

For the Spring 2006 Semester, general body meetings of the NPHC are on Mondays at 9:15 pm in room 314 of the Bowen-Thompson Student Union. The NPHC Executive board meets Wednesdays at 8:45 pm in room 309 of the Union.

At BGSU, NPHC groups conduct an "intake" process usually during Spring semester, along with the assistance of the local Graduate Chapter (a group of local alumni of each organization located in the Bowling Green/Toledo area).

To be eligible, students generally must have 2nd semester status, a 2.50 (or higher) cumulative GPA, and letters of recommendation from members of the fraternity or sorority.

Recently, during the first week of the Spring 2006 semester, the council organized and presented “NPHC Week”, which was comprised of programming that represented the ideals of the NPHC community. Members of the BGSU NPHC executive board will also travel to the Mid-American Greek Council Association (MGCA) conference this semester to present programs pertaining to the NPHC community to fellow Greeks from the region. On the BGSU campus, you may also see NPHC member organizations sponsoring late night event programming, community service projects, and special weeks that represent the organization. These events are included on the Greek calendar.

Within NPHC, organization presidents and executive board members serve one year terms in alignment with the academic year. Officer elections for the upcoming academic year usually occur in late March/early April each year. BGSU NPHC will be holding officer elections for the 2006-2007 academic year on Monday, April 10, 2006.

History of the National Pan-Hellenic Council, Inc.

On May 10, 1930, on the campus of Howard University, in Washington DC, the National Pan-Hellenic Council was formed as a permanent organization with the following charter members: Omega Psi Phi and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternities, and Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta and Zeta Phi Beta Sororities. In 1931, Alpha Phi Alpha and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternities joined the Council. Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority joined in 1937 and Iota Phi Theta Fraternity completed the list of member organizations in 1997.

The stated purpose and mission of the organization in 1930 was “Unanimity of thought and action as far as possible in the conduct of Greek letter collegiate fraternities and sororities, and to consider problems of mutual interest to its member organizations.” Early in 1937, the organization was incorporated under the laws of the State of Illinois and became known as “The National Pan-Hellenic Council, Incorporated.”
