Governing Councils

BGSU's Greeks are governed by four student run councils Panhellenic Council (Panhel) (sororities), Interfraternity Council (IFC) (fraternities), National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) and  Independent Greek Council (IGC). These councils, along with the staff in Greek Affairs, provides the leadership to the BGSU Greek Community that continually improves the undergraduate Greek experience for the 1,800 fraternity and sorority members.

Joining a sorority also makes you a member of the Panhellenic Council, the largest women’s organization on BGSU’s campus and one of the top Greek councils in the United States. The Panhellenic Council oversees the 13 Panhellenic sororities and helps these groups to flourish through organizing educational programs, planning and implementing formal recruitment, and coordinating/promoting chapter events. The Panhellenic council also gives back to its chapters through co-sponsorships. These opportunities assist the Panhellenic sororities to plan philanthropies and community service events to help the greater Bowling Green community.

The Interfraternity Council is the governing body that oversees the 17 social fraternities at Bowling Green State University. IFC strives to be a voice of the chapters to the university administration while also fostering collaboration among chapters. Each semester the Interfraternity council holds a philanthropic event for the campus community, Walk-A-Mile in Her Shoes in the spring and College Joes Vs. College Pros in the fall. Additionally, IFC holds roundtables each semester to assist chapter officers with any duties that they have within their chapter. Once someone joins an IFC fraternity they automatically become a member of IFC and are entitled to all of the benefits of an IFC man and are encouraged to get involved.

Nationally NPHC is a coalition of the nine largest historically African American Greek-letter fraternities and sororities. Locally BGSU is proud to represent eight of the nine organizations. Members of the constituent Greek-letter organizations of NPHC have convened to discuss and address issues of mutual concern. The collective social and economic power of the NPHC has been a major source of change for the African American community of BGSU since its inception.

Independent Greek Council (IGC) is the governing body for 7 Greek letter organizations at BGSU. Each organization is individually unique, but when all are brought together, they form a complete IGC.
